Super informative, thanks for posting the spreadsheet!!!

Question, when I had chickens (laying hens) several years ago I fed them on a layer formula and offered extra calcium free-choice just in case. Is there any reason I shouldn't do the same with my quail once we get them? They won't eat it if they don't need it, right?

Aside--I plan to keep my adult male quails in with the laying hens. Will it hurt the males to eat the higher calcium feed intended for the hens? Should I try to find a feed with lower calcium and just give free choice supplemental calcium for the girls?

(Thanks for all the info you have shared--I just stalked the whole thread!!)
I keep one male in with each group of my laying hens. They all eat the layer crumble feed.
I usually don't keep quail longer than 2 years.
I have never had an issue with my mails eating the layer feed.

I would not offer oyster shell on the side if you are feeding your birds a layer type feed.

How many have hatched so far?

We live in eastern AZ in the mountains, but before this we lived more central, north of Phx. The Gambel quail are some of my husband's favorite birds on the planet. Those babies are FAST!

Oh okay. How many are you getting?
Is your coop built and ready to go?
The minimum at Cackle is 15, so likely one or two more, since they always seem to send an extra or three. Our coop is built, but I still have to get the run put together (chain link kennel panels) and built the poop decks & roosts.

I have a first aid kit, all the gear (feeders, etc), grit, o'shell, stall pdz for the boards, etc., except food. I will feed them Purina Flock Raiser, or its equivalent from our feed store.

I'd be working on it today, and am getting anxious, but I need the hub's help and he's sidelined with a knee injury for a while. I want it all completely done before the chicks get here so there's no hammering and such to freak them out. Brooding them under a MHP out in the coop.
