Mysteriously Disappearing Eggs + No Hatches

While I don't raise ducks (Quail and Pheasant guy) but I agree with all the others. Rats, Snakes, Raccoons, Skunks, Weasels, and Snapping Turtles.... are all egg bandit suspects. Since you are talking about Ducks, I suspect that the nest is near water which boils the most likely suspects down to snakes, raccoons, skunks, and turtles as the most likely culprits. It could be a combination of the bunch stealing the eggs as well!

Since it only happens every other day or more with no egg shell fragments to be found ......I strongly suspect a snake it bellying up on an egg and needing time to digest it. The fact that momma hen left the nest could be due to the snake's routine presence.

Raccoons and Skunks would clean house and leave the shell fragments and might even attack the momma hen as well....not sure about rats.
Weasels will bite and suck. I had one sneaking in and killing chickens on the roost. It would get an egg every now and then but for the most part, the weasel would bite the neck and suck the blood on the birds much like a vampire.

I know I am late on the turn around, but keep the eggs warm at a constant 100 "preferred" degrees F, and the humidity around 50% and all should be fine. The temp can be off by 1 to 2 degrees and it will either speed or slow the development and the hatch date. A quick Styrofoam cooler, 40 watt incandescent light, and a thermometer will suffice in a pinch and help increase the survival if the temp and rotation are done correctly.

Hope I am not to late and all is well.

Probably a stupid question, but is it safe to candle an egg that is externally pipping but hasn't broke the surface?

Not sure what you mean by external pip but not broken the surface? An external pip means it has broken the outer shell...

As for the stink egg, I would remove it ASAP...you don't want it exploding onto the other eggs.

My recommendation is that you just leave the other eggs alone for now, its hard I know, We have all been there but you may drop one, I know, I have done it.

Okay I just woke up and I loked into the incubator and it still hasn't broken the surface. Either it was just preparing to externally pip or it just hasn't happened yet. And don't worry, I'm leaving the eggs alone now. :)

Update!

Number 2, the dead one, is most certainly dead. We did an eggtopsy and they were too soon to hatch and the membrane was a little dry, so I am assuming that there was not enough humidity. AND IT WAS NOT NUMBER ONE THAT WAS PIPPING! It was Number 4 and they broke through the shell! They are taking a break but then they will clear the pip into a hole, hopefully.

Yes, those stinky eggs can cause quite the problem...

And the piped egg can take quite a while to start hatching or not...a lot of things going on right now, it needs to finish absorbing the yolk and the blood vessels, its super critical it be left alone, it will chirp and wiggle and then rest.. I have had chicks pip and zip all within a few hours and then some that take a day or more... It never ceases to amaze me the amount of chicks that hatch when I am sleeping

It truly is amazing. Right now she's picking away at the inner membrane to get to the outer one. And by her being done by tonight, I meant she'll be hatched. :p

You do know that sometimes eggs look like there are chicks inside but it is just rotten stuff flouting around so don't get your hopes up
I know how it fells to think it is a chick and find out later it smell.
But don't give up ,Well YET

Yep. I cut open the dead egg and there was a chick that had about a day to go until hatching, but it was rotten. It was sad but at least they had no idea that they were alive or dead.
