Mystery Bantams

I just got done reading the post along with the photos after I saw your comment. And they are already sick and he said they made his flock sick too it seems with some dieing. Seriously I would be kicking myself. I would have not bought these chickens to begin with. Not only did you not know what they where, but you saw they where sick and bought them any how. And dont say you didnt know they where sick cause you said you knew when he charged you more for healthy looking ones. You should be giving yourself a big boot in the butt for being so stupid.

Im going to agree. I doubt they are Serama (and very poor ones they would be anyway) because aside from BYC, Seramas are actually pretty rare. Im thinking 2-3 months or so?

Also...
IMO.....Kargo bought some birds from this farmer and put them in quarentine and later found out they were sick? That could have been the point when Kargo was dissatisfied with the seller.
Then later, without taking good bio-security measures, spread this to the rest of the flock at home and was then really upset.

Dont know if Kargo didnt get to look at the rest of the flock or didnt know to look for signs of illness when buying the birds. They could have been bought off Craigslist at already in a box to go, or at a swap, so there were no other sick birds to see.....

We dont know if they were displaying signs when bought (or even what the symptoms are--maybe something hard to pinpoint)

Im thinking that when the birds started dying, that Kargo realized that this farmer was dishonest by lying about their health after he said that the price was for good, "healthy" birds. I doubt the farmer said, "My birds are sick, but these dont have it yet or dont look like it anyway..but they cost more if you dont want illness".
Lots of people advertise that they have healthy flocks.....
Im thinking also that Kargo has talked to others who have had similar issues from this farmer and that is was is starting the bad reputation.....
I'd like to know what happened...

We all make mistakes, and Im sure Kargo is already regretting this and really kicking his or herself--- but now has to learn from it! Hope you can get it under control and only buy from knowledgeable breeders or go see the facilities yourself! Practice better bio-security measures in the future when messing with birds in quarantine! Best of luck!

It looks to me like kargo may have made a mistake. But I don't see enough info to show that kargo knowingly bought sick birds and think some people are getting ahead of things by coming down on him/her for it.

kargo best of luck to you hope tis all works out for you. And if ya made a mistake chock it up to experience and learn from it.

We've all made mistakes in buying chickens and now that some of us have years of experience, we've learned from these mistakes and now know what to look for before purchasing any birds. That doesn't mean we should heavily criticize someone who hasn't had as much experience. Some of these previous posts seem a little brutal to me so, before you post something, remember the type of advice you liked receiving when you were just getting started. Best of luck to you kargo.

First of all, I'd like to start off by stating that I am a minor. An aspiring vet, actually. I started out with my chicken adventures this spring, and do not have 10+ years of exprience as many of likely you do. The farmer was reccommended to us by a trusted friend who owns a very large flock. We always ask her for advice whenever there is something we should know. The man picked out the chicks we bought for us except for the two little bantams. He caught them with a net (one's head got stuck in the net and he hardly even cared!) and boxed them up quickly. I figured he just wanted to make things fast and easy for us, altough I personally wanted to pick out my birds. What was I suppossed to do? Start yelling at a large man? Not happening. He did sell us two perfectly helathy birds. Two silkie chicks that were less than a week old. They were kept seperate from the other birds, and I think that is why they are healthy. The lighting was dim in his barn and I could not tell that any of the birds were sneezing. I do not believe they started sneezing before we were 3/4 of the way home. Even then, I thought nothing of it because we sneeze sometimes and are not sick. How should I know that chickens are sick when they sneeze? Since I did notice them sneeze on the way home, I made sure my mother and I quarantined them on our porch instead of under the carport and in the shed near other birds. Their coop is almost done, but for now they have temporary brooders. This farmer's reputation seems to be getting worse every day. He seemed like a perfectly good man when we met him. When I saw his birds, I was sure they were being kept in dirty, (it smelled terrible, but then again, our plave does too, every day before we have a chance to clean out cages.) tight quarters, but who was I to tell an adult that? We are suppossed to respect adults, aren't we? We too our most sick chick to the vet, but they turned us away, so we put them all on antibiotics. We're trying our best for our babies. We are perfectly good chicken mommie. We even have chicks in the house. And if you would like to see some of our birds, there are some recent pictures and some older ones here https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=233407 and here.

Thank you for your kind words.
