I'm feeling a little silly. The chick I thought was my mystery chick has been identified as one of two Ameraurcanas. They have very different coloring, but both have muffs and beards. The pictures below (and the photo from McMurray Hatchery) are of the mystery chick which I believe is a Dorking. I can't believe I hadn't noticed the 5 toes! Am I correct in my identification?

which one is your suspected ameraucana?
This one. She is much larger now, the chicks are from McMurray Hatchery. She has muffs and a beard. I'm still a little confused about the difference between Easter Eggers and Ameraurcanas, but McMurray calls them Ameraucanas. Her name is Endora.

Well, this is an easter egger. It doesn't match any ameraucana chick colors.

The difference is, Ameraucana is a breed. It follows a breed standard and comes in several certified colors. They have pea combs, muffs, beard, slate legs and MUST lay blue eggs.

Easter Eggers, also known as americana (note spelling), lake shore eggers, blue bells, green queens... they don't follow a standard as they are not a breed. They are a mix of anything and a bird with the blue egg gene, which can also include easter egger x easter egger. They can have any comb, can be crested, muffs and beard, or not. Any color legs, but often green. They can lay any color, but are typically bred to lay green, olive, or blue eggs.

Thank you for the information. So, EE are the "doodles" of the chicken world 😉? Since she is an egg-laying pet, being a mix isn't a negative for me. I'll be interested to see what color eggs she produces.
