Hi everyone! I've been visiting the forum as a guest now for a while but only just joined today.

I'm hoping for help identifying my four mystery chicks, so if anyone has any ideas I'm all ears. My boyfriend got me them for Xmas as hatching eggs, but he didn't think to ask what breed they were when he bought them. D'oh! I phoned the supplier, who remembered the sale, and he said he "thinks" they were Marans. But I thought Marans laid very dark brown eggs, and my eggs were just pale brown, just like normal shop bought eggs for eating. My boyfriend thinks the eggs came from the coop that had Shavers in it, but he's not sure. The supplier also sells Black Rocks, and pictures of Black Rock chicks I've seen look a little bit like mine. But I'm new to chickens and so I don't really have a clue. As day-olds they were all very dark grey/almost black with yellow breasts and various yellow splodges. The photos are of them today, at 18 days old.

Pic no. 1 is chick no. 1. I think it might be a boy as it's the only one whose comb has grown - very noticeably compared with the other three.

Pic no. 2 is chick no. 2. It's the darkest of the four and the only one with dark coloured legs and a really dark beak.

Pics no. 3 & 4 are chick no. 3. It's the biggest of the four and is feathering up the fastest. It's got a huge tail compared with the others.

Pic no. 5 is chick no. 4. It's got lovely stripy feathering on its wings.

Thanks for looking, everyone.

Hmm. I have two Black Rocks and do you know I've never once noticed what colour their toes are! Away off outside for a nosey at them right now. Also I've just googled and found a whole pile of photos of Cuckoo Marans chicks at a few days old, and they DO look awfully like mine did a couple of weeks ago. I just thought mine couldn't possibly be CMs because the eggs were so pale. But if their eggs are normally a bit paler then maybe that's what I've got after all. Thanks for the opinions...

I'll agree here...my 2 Aussies both had white tips on their wings as babies but both now have that great flashy black feathers.

Here they are as babies...
