I have 2 ISA Browns, 1 Swedish Flower Hen, 1 Buff Orpington, and 2 Speckled Sussex that are 1-1/2 years old. I added 2 new hens that have started laying...one Brabenter (white egg) and a Maran (Drk Brown egg). I had almost every egg accounted for as I've seen my hens lay them. So...this October when my 2 new hens started laying about a month later I started getting a dark brown speckled egg also. I do get the drk speckled and the other dark brown in the same day often.

My question is could one of the sussex go from an almost cream colored egg to a dark brown egg after their molt? I am getting way less light eggs since their molt.. I am totally stumped because I'd never had eggs from any of my older hens that brown.

The one photo shows the new speckled next to my new Maran's egg (in case she could be laying both?) and the one with 4 eggs shows the darkest brown I'd had from all my older girls along with the light color my Sussex were laying. And the new maran and drk speckled .

Hope that's not too confusing.

The Marans likely laid both of the dark brown eggs. It's normal for them to lay both solid brown and speckled brown eggs.

Your Sussex probably laid the light tan egg or possibly the BO did. Not sure about the dull brown egg beside the tan egg. I'm not familiar with what color the Swedish lays.

My isa browns used to lay an egg like your speckled egg. Usually there would be more speckles when they skipped a day of laying. The color makes me think it's one of theirs. But since the shape and size are so close to your maran's I'm really wondering. Were they in the same nest box?

Thank you for responding! One of my ISA Browns/Golden Buffs laid the lighter Brown, my Flower Hen lays a pale blush color. I only have one Maran, that was my confusion as I had both the dark brown and the speckled dark brown on the same day. I get them a couple times a week on the same day...it's very strange to me I never had them until I got my 2 new girls...:hmm

Thank you so much! I have 2 Isa's that were my older girls and I know both their eggs. One is the lighter of the browns in the one photo. The other is a huge light speckled also...but 8this new speckled showed up with my new Maran. I actually saw her lay the dark brown, but I haven't seen anyone lay the speckled yet. I think they were in different nesting boxes..but got them both in the same day and that's happened a few times. It seems so strange .
