Mystery Free "Rare" chick from McMurray 2/13/10 **pix UPDATED here*

Looks just like the little Cuckoo Marans chick that i picked up from a local feed store last year and yes, he turned out to be a roo.

Super sweet and friendly. Although, I can't really see much of a comb (so it might be too early to determine sex.) it may be a Dominique, they have pea combs that are much smaller at a younger age.

So hard to tell at this point what sex really. But I'm gonna go with Cuckoo Maran for breed.

I ordered a whole bunch of McMurray's Cuckoo Marans last year.
This little guy looks almost like them, but not quite. None of mine had that yellow patch around the beak corners, and most of them had a bit of grey/black on pink legs.
If he is a Cuckoo Maran, then I'd say he's a he, because of the lighter patch. The girls were all darker.
Never seen an BR chick, so no clue there.

Thanks everyone ... I agree with the guess of Cuckoo Maran and likely a roo (darn it). Now I'll have to see if I can find myself a hen. I wonder what you'd get if you crossed a cuckoo maran cock with a white leghorn hen?

Darn, I was suppose to get the same rare chick deal from McMurrary next week with my order, but I have to agree with you that chick looks pretty common. My first guess was a barred rock also... I thought for sure I was in for something cool.

Well now I ordered 8 dif breeds from Ideal last year and here's what I know.. If it has a rose comb it's a Dominique. It could be an Australorp but they aren't rare as far as I know. And since I currently have a Cuckoo Marans chick w/ it's mother and had 3 from Ideal it could be a CM. I would check to see which of these three Mcmurray has listed as "rare". I highly doubt that they would consider a BR as rare. If it's none of the three I mentioned then it's got to be a Marans of some kind. Oh a rose comb would be wide on your chick. As to the sex I have no idea. Oh by the way I printed out chick pics of every breed I ordered and posted them over the brooder. My current marans chick has black feet and no white on the chest, the white spot sits toward the back its' head. Can't post a good pic cause mom won't let me near them.

I think McM uses rare and free interchangeably. I got a Red Star and and EE for my two free chicks last fall in the two batches I ordered. I think you get whatever they have the most of as extras. It is better than nothing unless it is a little boy and you can't keep him.
He is cute and in a couple of weeks you should be able to figure out which it is for sure. Honestly, I don't know how anyone can say it is a boy at that age already unless it were a sex-link
