Mystery Hen

What color egg does she lay?? Are her leg shanks lightly feathered? To me, she looks like a poorly colored, Wheaten Marans hen, with a Carnation type mutant comb! Big problem in the breed! I have a hen here with a very similar comb, a Black Copper Marans. I just got done culling off all the roos here too that also displayed this comb. These combs can be small and neater in apperance, or can be huge looking like trees sprouting out of their heads! Ask me how I know!!

Honestly? With that gamey tight-feathered body, large upright well spanned tail, large white earlobes, long neck, odd/rare fault in Wheatens for Marans, and very fine legs you think she's a Marans?

Most cull Wheatens I see are pinch-tailed, but often with a more normal Marans body. Large, somewhat fluffy, stronger looking skull, having noticeable wattles, etc.

Yup, I've seen some around here a couple of years ago that looked just like her. Now whether there was something else in the mix or not, I do not know, but they had them listed as Wheaten Maran. No S, that should've been my first clue!

lol Yeah definitely not Marans.

There's a lot of "Black Coppers" that get sold out here that are obviously not even Marans, just mutts with similar coloration.

I was sold a pair of 'black coppers' then hen just grew to be all black, not a lick of copper...that pair is not here anymore.
