Mystery; How Is My Chickens Water Disappearing?

The connection on the hose could be looser on the days it siphoned out. I have had whole stock tanks empty because someone left the hose in.
If your hose is connected to a hydrant, for example, water will syphon back into it when the hose is left in the water container.
If the waterer is outside, who else is drinking there?
Mary
Take the hose out and see what happens.
It's siphoning out somehow.
Because......
Okay, so just don't leave the hose in? Cool!

Remove the end of the hose from the bucket. The well is sucking the water back out of the bucket. The siphon action is caused by the fact that the bottom of the well is lower than the bottom of the bucket.

It took my citified parents a while to figure out this mystery as well. They had a big tank they used to water their cow and this kept happening to them, resulting in an empty tank in the afternoon when they had filled it in the morning. Just take the hose out and your problem will be solved.
