Long story short: We ordered three Cuckoo Marans pullets from Meyer Hatchery. Two died within 48 hours of arrival. One of those died within 2 hours of arrival! We contacted Meyer, and since the minimum number to ship is 3, we added a third chick. Then we upgraded from Cuckoo Marans to Meyer's "Rare Marans Collection." The chicks were more than $8 a piece, but we figured they were worth it! They arrived on Tuesday and two were dead on arrival. Meyer forgot to put a heat pack in the box.
What's happening between Meyer and us regarding their forgetting to put a heat pack in is a whole different story. What I'm trying to do now is ID the sole survivor, who I nursed and warmed back to full healthy chickdom (other than the pasty butt I'm treating daily). According to the Rare Marans Collection page, the chicks could be White Marans, Blue Splash Marans, Golden Cuckoo Marans, Black Copper Marans. We've ID'd the two sad frozen chicks as a Black Copper Marans and a White Marans. This chick doesn't fit the bill for any of the descriptions!
Here's a photo of the chick, Mariette, after yesterday morning's butt bath. The rest of her body is your basic chick platinum yellow. Her face, however, has that darker pigmented down, almost an olive gray. That and her legs, which are also an olive-grey color, are the unique thing about her. She is clean legged. I spent an hour on Google looking up Maran chicks and got nowhere. If anyone knows I'd appreciate it (the packing slip identifying the chicks got left out with the heat pack).
