Mystery Muscovy Neck Problem

I dunno, mine seems to be doing fine and does not appear to be in any distress. I would think that if he were in pain he would sit around looking sick, listless, not eating, feathers fluffed up, etc...but he just toodles around the yard doing everything the others do.

So, for now, I am just letting him be. If things ever change, and he appears to be suffering, however, then I will do what is necessary to end his suffering.

Thank you for all of your help everyone. If anyone else has any comments, I'd really love to hear it!

I have a Pekin who is the same way. His name is Splish. He seems to be getting around okay albeit a little bit slower than his "brothers & sisters". It can't be dietary as they all eat the same thing. They all have niacin and vitamins added to their drinking water.

One thing that I noticed with Splish is that the day we got him, his beak color was "off". Pekins should have a orange beak, were Splish's is flesh colored.

Splish is now 4 months old and we love him dearly. Because he's slower than the other ducks, we make sure that he's well protected at all times. He wouldn't ever be able to get away from a predator. So if we have the ducks free ranging, we stay right there close to Splish so that we can scoop him up if we need to.

Its really hard to see in these pictures.

But his neck pulls to the right and downward 99% of the time. Actually his whole body pulls to the right. He doesn't seem to be in any pain. He runs along with the other ducks, even though he's slower than them. Isn't lethargic in any way either. Eats like a horse as well. So for now, as long as he's doing well, we won't cull him.

I have a Mallard X Blue Swede that has that, only a little more extreme. He hatched out fine, and then when I got up the next day his neck was...deformed. At first he had a little trouble, but he adapted perfectly and is now 4 years old. He is best friends with a blind Silkie Rooster! LOL.

We had to take him to the vet once, because a very small gate fell on him and blood was coming from his nose. He was fine, and we asked the vet if he knew why his neck was like that. The vet told us the most likely explanation would be a stroke, or something similar. He said that since he wasn't born with it, and developed it later, that a stroke was really the only thing that could cause it.

That being said, he's not in pain and he's a very happy duck. They can be perfectly fine, so I say let him be. I know that mine can't breed, due to not being able to grasp their neck and get himself up there, so yours may not be able to either.

Here's a few pics of mine, Bon Jovi:
