Mystery part in saddle area

Hi,

I have very little chicken experience, so this is probably normal.

Our three hens each have a small finger-like thing in their saddle areas. It looks like chicken skin, is perhaps a quarter or third of an inch long and very skinny. It doesn't seem to bother them but we are curious about what it is.

If necessary I will post a photo...

I think that you are describig their oil or preen gland. It is located at the base of their back just before the tail and aids them in maintaining feather quality.
