Mystery Quilt/ New Year's Day

Second part of first step. Make 4 patch blocks out of the strips that you have just made.

Grab two of the segments, aligning them right sides together along their long edges, but with contrasting colors opposite each other (like-colors will be at a diagonal). Sew together along the long edge to create a four-patch unit.

Press the new seam allowance to the side (or press it open if you feel that side-pressing makes the unit too bulky). You can also often fan-out the center seam intersections of a four-patch unit and press allowances in a somewhat circular pattern. Experiment a bit to see what works best for you.

Make a total of 72 four-patch units. Pile them up in a group we'll call "A."

Directions for Part B are up, if you want to see them. I am still working on the above. Janet has increase the dark blue strip cutting directions from 9 to 10. So you will need to cut one additional strip for that color.

Part B is here. http://quilting.about.com/od/quiltpatternsprojects/ss/2011-New-Years-Day-Mystery-Quilt-Pattern_3.htm

OMGoodnees I'm so far behind. All I can do now is print the directions. Chicks are hatching, power was out earlier I had to take the bator to the barn 7 miles away and stay with them. DS had a bloody nose, I have family coming to eat dinner.

I will do better tomorrow OH and my printer ran out of ink. What a way to start the new year. I'm glad your putting the directions on here so I can save them if I miss something.

Sounds like a rough way to start the New Year, except the chickies...and possible the relatives. Not to worry, the directions stay up after today. Just use the link in the first message to get to it. I probably won't post any more until I am finished, as I don't want to keep bumping my own thread.

Good luck with the chicks...I will look for pictures.

The bottom left piece will go between the two pieces above it. Block on the right is D and E (I think)

I couldn't image how this thing was going to come together with the guidelines for the color choices, but I'm glad I took a chance.

Wow, you are dedicated! Can't wait to see it. I'm up early to work on mine, can't promise it will be finished today though.

Wow! such pretty colors. I love the swirl red in the first block and when they are all together the fall center block really pops out. That green batik that we had that was similar was a stinker to work with. I had I hard time telling if it was upside down or right side up. Janet's planning a string quilt party for SuperBowl Sunday. hint.
