We were told this poor guy was a she and didn't know otherwise til the rest of the hens started laying.

Looks almost identical to my Rhode Island Red

Number two is a barred rock and number one looks like he might be a cross breed.

the first might be a black copper marans just with out feathered shanks the second might be a cuckoo marans or a black sex link rooster since he doesn't have yellow legs like a barred rock should

Number one is a partridge rock, with maybe a little mix but not much and number two is a cuckoo Maran.

I originally thought they could both be marans but neither have feathered legs although the black one did have some start to grow for a while. While the gray one was still presumed to be a hen I was really excited to see if she would lay chocolate eggs and that's how I would determine but she turned out to be a very vocal he.

not all marans have feathered shanks, only the French line does the American line does not
