When I first got chickens about 4 years ago, my mom told me that chickens are so dumb that when it rains they will look up to see what’s hitting them on the head, and open their mouths and drown.
Now my mom’s not stupid. College graduate, 76 yrs old. But it’s what she’s heard and therefore it is.
BTW it’s a good thing that’s a myth or all mine would drown. Too much rain!!

I heard this rumor too but about turkeys. Not sure if it is true or not but doubtful. I just have chickens so idk

Going on about myths and rumors...i had some eggs that were only about a week old and decided to make deviled eggs for a party since i have so many. Well...it didnt go well. It took me 2 hours to peel 18 eggs. I had heard about how difficult it was to do this when eggs are fresh but my experience previously was with grocery store eggs which are usually months old by that time. I tried every trick the internet had to offer and it was still a nightmare. When i came to my familys barbeque with this information they were shocked at this information. My sister in law even said "ive been living a lie...ive always worried my eggs would go bad but theyre already old!"

my mother used to say that turkeys would look up into the rain and drown..
I think that rumor was started to emphasize how stupid turkeys were..
maybe long ago a turkey died during a rain storm and it was misinterpreted that it drowned that way..
but if it was possible for any bird or animal to do so, my first vote would be , turkey ..

A lot of these myths are just based on ignorance. However that being said...i think it might also be based on poor schooling. You wouldnt believe how many times ive had to explain to people that all chickens lay eggs regardless of a rooster being present and it will only have a "baby" in it if it is fertilized by the rooster. I mean...seriously? We all know people have periods...we all know where babies come from...how do you think chickens reproduce?! Asexually?!

sometimes people who you think should know, surprise you.
My 40 year old nephew, who has been visiting us for all of his life as do all of our nephews and nieces.. ask me how does the hen feed the baby chicks ?? does she nurse them ??
and he was serious as a heart attack..

Omg. What is wrong with people?! I met my dads girlfriend a month ago and she asked "what are they saying?" Um..well what am i? The chicken whisperer? Well the translator broke this morning but that one only speaks in german and im pretty sure it said something antisemetic
