Nail trimming?

Is it necessary to trim the chickens nails as they grow older or will they stay trim on their own from scratching dirt??? I've seen pictures of chickens with really long nails that need trimming in the past. I always thought by continuous scratching that would be sufficient enough to keep them shorter, but after seeing those photo's I'm second guessing myself. Should I buy a nail clipper for my girls?

I have to trim nails on some regularly, and with others I never have to do it. I use dog nail trimmers.
