Naked Neck/Turken Thread

So do you want to take up a collection so you can buy some ?

Our rooster will be 24 weeks on Monday and is tipping the scales at 7 pounds already. He is trying to breed anything in sight, but his technique is not very good yet. He's actually being quite rough with the pullets (and even some of the smaller cockerels LOL). I'm hoping he out-grows this stage quickly.

We were planning to put some EE eggs in the incubator in two weeks, but I have a feeling some of them might be NNs.

I have had several necked necks over the years and enjoy having then in my flock. I have read where they are an important part of cross breeding in French meat production, and have been used in cross breeding programs to improve lines in hot climates. This is of particular interest to me since I live in southern Arizona. I have an interest in hearing from the group if there are necked neck enthusiasts breeding for size and meat production or for egg production in hot climates. I want to start incorporating the breed more and would like to learn from folks with experience.

I have had Naked Necks both in Texas and I Arkansas. They seem to do well in any environment they are put in.

Now when I had them when I lived in Texas that was probably 30 years ago, they were much bigger birds than what can be found now. They were still great layers. The newer version are smaller and in my opinion not as good of a layer. But still fairly good layers and a lot depends on the line you acquire and who they are from.

Now I'm not really downing them just comparing to what I had years ago. I still love my NN's. So much so I'm using them in a project for green egg layers. Am still keeping some pure also.

That in part drove my message. The batch of chicks I ordered three years ago, was large dual purpose breeds and included a few necked necks and easter eggers. Of these one of the easter eggers hens grew to be the largest, out pacing the delawares, necked necks, marans and welsummers, and matching the dark brahman. She laid jumbo eggs which likely led to her demise from a prolapse. Needless to say I am not impressed with what the hatcheries call large dual purpose breeds. I can't believe the necked necks used in french Label Rouge meat production are the same size that my birds were.

I live in southern AZ and am in the process of hatching my first NNs from two separate NPIP breeders. (Today is day 16 of incubation. So excited!) The fact that they're supposed to be such a hardy breed, especially in hot climates, was of major interest to me as well. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they live up to their reputation.
