Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I did a perfect video today of Stormy and came in and thought it was on there and for some reason it didn't save it on the memory card. So then I looked and Hope and Junior wasn't on there either. Maybe the sun will be out tomorrow so I can get some more videos of them. Junior is now almost 4 months old and getting huge, like his dad.

I tried to get my little Rose today and she saw the video camera and took of running in the opposite direction. Maybe tomorrow I can get a video up of her running away from me. She was interested in the shiny new camera but when I pointed it at her and she saw it stuck to my face she took off. Junior wasn't scared though I got the closest close up possible of him with his face right in the camera.

She is gorgeous! All of your birds look great. :)

p.s. that is how most of my birds are... No camera, no problem... Camera- Nopenopenope!

I will have to get some new pictures of my naked neck project birds. I finally hatched one perfect one from my cross, black skin, black feathers, and a single comb. I am crossing my fingers that it is a hen. I also hatched one with black skin and white feathers with black patches, and my newest hatch was a naked neck with black feathers and regular skin except the top part of its legs, which are black skinned.

Congrats n can't wait for pics :)

I have chicks coming from Murray Mcmurray About February 3rd,and I ordered a couple turkens and it's the first time I've ever had them. Can't wait

Mottled and Buff
Want to trade eggs? I'm looking for large sized tan/brown/buff spotted chickens with yellow legs. Mottled, or mottled-gene carriers.

Here is what I've bred so far, going for a tri-color "calico" or Mille effect:

I actually was not trying for Naked Necks! These are an offshoot from my breeding program, trying to create an American version of Swedish Flower Hens, called "Aloha Chickens". I borrowed my neighbor's Naked Neck hen because the hen had the BIG size, yellow legs, and pale buff color that I needed! The Naked Neck gene came along for the ride. LOL!

Here is the original breeding pen - the rooster had amazing amounts of white spotting that I loved, but he was thin and "weedy" and desperately needed more bulk and substance:

The result of this cross was several Buff hens that carried the Mottling gene:

And the chicks shown in these new pics are the grand-kids from the original NN / mottled rooster. Only four out of seven were spotted - I sold the solid colored ones. Dad to these chicks could be several roosters, but I believe they are all sired by my Sussex-bred roosters as those roos have pink legs and so do these chicks.

I have had several necked necks over the years and enjoy having then in my flock. I have read where they are an important part of cross breeding in French meat production, and have been used in cross breeding programs to improve lines in hot climates. This is of particular interest to me since I live in southern Arizona. I have an interest in hearing from the group if there are necked neck enthusiasts breeding for size and meat production or for egg production in hot climates. I want to start incorporating the breed more and would like to learn from folks with experience.
You should get some chicks or eggs from my friend Deb in Tucson. I just set her up with some chickens last year. I gave her this extra Naked Neck rooster that turned into this FABULOUS "Mille" guy.

Do note that he is not very large - not "meat bird" type - he is more Leghorn size and weight, which are not known for being very "meaty". They are extremely heat tolerant, and good layers. But I do have some Sussex up here in Phoenix that would cross perfectly and add more bulk:

If you are willing to work at it for a few generations you could create some lovely very large Mille birds that would be beautiful to look at and good for either eggs or meat production. The result would be very colorful, big beefy Naked Necks that anyone would love to own. But it would require some work to get there!!!

Very cool! I think you'll really like them. I just hatched my first flock of NN, eleven lovely little chicks that have completely won me over and "sold" me on this breed.

I can pen up my NN girls for you before then. So when would they have to ship out? Monday the 9th?

Try to send me a PM last week of February to remind me to pen them for you!
