Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Don't worry if your birds are psychos at this age. They will start to calm down a bit as they get older. You can also start feeding them treats from your hand. I give mine a small bowl of treats several times a day. Now they come running to me when they see me coming. Mine really like broccoli and are also eating chopped banana and cucumber. I'll start giving them vegetables like corn and peas pretty soon. Grass cutting from the yard are also good. My past chicks have loved cantaloupe and rice. Give them food and they will think you're momma.

I agree. I have to be very hands off due to allergy towards chicken dander. Normally mine are handled only for moving them to/from brooder and between pens. Some have literally never been touched- raised by mother hens. Some of the chicks act very scared but usually they mellow down quite a lot, especially once they start laying. Some become annoying, getting under my feet making it impossible to get anything done. All of this is with basically no touching nor even any attempt to tame them at all. I can only stand and look at them, so.. lol

p.s. that mother hen and her babies I just posted pic of? She was a little aloof as chick and touched only when she was moved from brooder to a grow out pen and then to the breeding pen. When she went broody, the cat litter box nest she was in was simply picked up and moved to the 'broody pen' she's currently in. Yet she lets me walk by her and she brings her babies right under me. At most she reacted at the camera being stuck at her face(that's her going 'what is that? at the camera in pic) but she relaxed almost immediately..

Maybe 8? I don't know.. But that hen is just amaizing! I love her small comb and wattles and big body! I just hope to get hen that looks like that.

Yeah I like about medium size combs- not too small but not so big either. I also like for them to be meaty so they feel surprisingly heavy when picked up. Another line is really good for that- they look 'regular sized' but feel extremely heavy and solid when handled.

However her brothers do have combs that are on the big side... from one of lines of black skinned naked necks I've had over 20 yrs.

Maybe 12, I won't guess any more. With this last picture I like her even more! Is she bantam sized? And does she have feathered feet?

She's regular size... not bantam, not large fowl. No feathered feet..

Those are weeds that get really big, 3 feet tall normally but get to 4 feet easily during a wet winter. Horrible plant, but let it grow in the empty pen(used to be peafowl pens but sold all of them). Out here, fall- spring is the local landscape's growing season. Rest of the year it's extremely dry and very hot. Already 80 degrees F now. (27degreesC)

Ochochicas thanks for the advice, I hold a bowl of their food on my lap and they have started to eat from there but I have to be very still and silent or they scream and run away so I hope they do calm down with age

Kassaundra very nice looking birds! Shakespeare is gorgeous!

DesertChic wow that one looks a lot like two of my girls now (I hope they turn out that beautiful!) and thanks for the advice, I'm trying to give them space but it's so hard when they are so adorable! I guess this is what being a parent is like, they are wanting to party and socialize with their friends and not boring ole mom haha!

Kev thanks for giving me hope they'll get better with age
