It must be that age. My daughter will be 4 next month and naked necks are her favorite!!

HAHAhahaHA, I must have a 4-year-old mentality --- Naked Necks are my favorites too!

Thank you all for the welcome and being so friendly to a newbie!

I raise NN's because they look like buzzards! Just kidding. I decided on NN's because of the extreme South Texas heat.
I live in Hondo, Texas. That's 30 miles west of San Antonio.

Last summer temps were well over 100 degrees for 60 days. I had a bunch of Wyandottes. They all died!
I have a neighbor up the road that runs about 200 RI Reds. Dark brown eggs are a politically correct food in San Antonio!
His birds were dropping like flies! My NN's didn't like the heat, but they all survived.

Wyandottes have problems with heat?

Got BLR last summer.. they were still young but they're now fully grown, deep bodied and very fluffy, surprised me a little bit. Now a little worried about them handling the summers here- always hits 110-120F.

Your friend needs to consider breeding naked neck into the RIR, it really helps them handle the heat better. He can do the cross just once, keep the cross sons and breed back to pure RIR for mostly RIR that mostly lay dark brown eggs(some may lay a little lighter brown eggs).

Our summers here in the upper Mojave 100 miles south of Death Valley are usually above 100 degrees or above for three consecutive months and all breeds survive. They need shade and pans of water to walk into when ever they need to cool down. My Wyandottes did fine as well as other full feathered birds.

Those other breeds give our NNs contrast and enhance their beauty. Besides, we need those others so we get our cuties, such as Percy with his white whiskers.

I originally tried NN because of the heat, I lost all my black chickens except one to heat last summer, when we had that streak of 100+ days. My current project is making shade cloth awnings for the coops, I have nothing but scrawny, thorny mesquite trees on the property so I have to make do. Will wet down the shade cloth in the morning and use ice in the nipple waterers and jugs on the ground. Hope not to lose any this year.

Greensearcher shade cloth works well as I have made frames to cover my entire garden else the intense heat and sun fry my birds and plants. If you give the birds a little pan of water to take footbaths they will love you much more. Yes the water become yucky but it doesn't matter to them. The wet feet cools them down.

the pictures of your NN and yes some of us do have a few other breeds for cross breeding so we can make more beautiful birds such as showgirls and others.

Not my fault those Wyandottes are here! They were shoved upon me and the person drove off before I could say 'no thanks'! I swear! SWEAR!

Would it help with me getting back in good graces that I let a naked neck hen into their pen and kept only the naked necked babies....?
