Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Everything Kev said, plus the only caviat is that boys tend to be "sturdier" during incubation, so if any harsh, or out of norm conditions exist during incubation it is more likely to kill the female embryo then the male, but not change the gender of the embryo, that is already set.

That reminds me. there is a mutant gene with the fantastic name of ladykiller. It kills the female embryos.

Hello My name is Sue. Has anyone crossed the N/N s to the crested cream legbars? I have just 1 n/n hen. She light red. I have crossed her with my Partridge brahmas have 10 teenager (12-2015) hatch the beginning of the year. They are great horse manure spreaders.
Love that cross but the eggs look to much the same to leave her in that pen. I thought this cross would be interesting. The plus the hens would lay green eggs for sure.
I am only on page 165 in reading and looking at the pictures so I may ask questions that have already been asked.
Love the cross breds it is always so interesting on how they turn out.

I'll try to get some better pictures later today Boy they are always hungry

Hi and welcome Sue!

Yep it is lots of fun to cross and see what happens or start on a personal project. :)

There have been a few NN brahma crosses posted in here, beautiful birds.

On the topic of colored eggs- I have a mother and daughter laying blue eggs and a couple 'grand daughters' growing out. Had green eggers in large fowl, none of the pullets kept from last year laid colored eggs... really hoping one or two cockerels used this spring are colored egg carriers.... will find out in a few months.

I have two Legbar x Turken pullets. If genetics work correctly, they should be olive eggers but I'm not betting any money on it. Only one of the pullets is crested, and the offspring from my legbar rooster lay white eggs. I'm thinking all the legbars I bought were mixed with something else (brown leghorns)?? Still cute and sweet little birds.

Ouch... white eggs and no crests in the crosses? I'd agree there has been some mixing in the legbars.

Quote: I have crossed a cuckoo marans ( med brown egg) hen with the legbars . They lay a beautiful green egg. It is olive but a beautiful shade. I really like the chickens too

My nakeneck hen lays a light brown egg, I am guessing she is part Rhode Island Red/ turkin Both probably brown egg layer.
I have bred my Legbars and all the pullets except one lay a nice light blue egg, one her egg is slightly green but more aquae colored. Beautful color.
My hens are beginning to take spring break. The Turkin hen is still laying.

Did someone on here say they had blue egg laying turkins? I have heard they have them but never saw one.

I got mine via an egg trade- was supposed to be NN for NN but, surprise, all of the eggs were blue. I told them immediately they sent me wrong eggs but nope. Not a single one was green, I was impressed. I still have one old hen from this line, 20 years old.. she still lays but goes for months between clutches. Last year I thought, best breed her before that line goes completely gone. Only got to hatch very few chicks- was able to set less than 10, got 5 chicks- two cockerels, 3 pullets. Two lay tan but the third one lays blue eggs- was surprised because had to use unrelated rooster from tan egg line... checked with others about egg color in person, they all say truly blue, no hint of green. That's pretty hard to achieve, after outcrossing.

Here's the blue egger daughter- the chicks aren't hers though:

I finally got a good little shot of my featherless silky! Any ideas if it might he a little hen or Roo? Also.. no idea how i got him, hiS sisters were all very normal. He is my only, "special" baby. :)

Haha what a cutie!

By the size of comb, my guess would be a roo.

It has something else very interesting- the third finger is separate and visible?! Normally that digit is not visible, almost totally fused with the middle finger.

The feather pattern seems rather different from mine and Kassaundra's.

Precious, my most feathered one has a very symmetrical feather pattern- a perfect circle on top of her head and a parallel, matching row down her back on each side of the spine. The others are extremely or totally naked. The ones with any feathers have it behind the comb and a few on the wings, where the primaries or secondaries would have grown.. and strangely, feathers on the elbows seem to be a pattern. Otherwise they are totally naked, naked naked...

An interesting thing I noticed, the feathers on them are totally soft, no hard quill part. It feels like down. They definitely are not silkie feathered though.
