I'm so excited!!!! The mostly NN eggs I put under my broody hen started hatching last night, and the first to emerge is a lovely buff colored NN chick. Momma Lily got off the nest very briefly last night when it was roughly 100 degrees out so she could gulp down quick meal, so I was able to snap a somewhat blurry photo of the hatching chick. And just because I finally got a photo of my (most of) my NN flock, here's a picture of them too:
I agree, that pattern is impossible on a cockerel, unless henny feathering is involved... is it? That one definitely has a laced polish as parent., The other one.. not too sure. what color polish do you have? Pretty colors on those two.

I played with graphing out the weights for my Naked Necks over the past 3 weeks, and I found a way to represent them that seemed to convey a lot at once. X axis includes individual birds, and Y axis is weight in ounces. (Excel and I were having a disagreement about display of the numbers on the axis, so it doesn't show numbers on the axis. Oh well.)
Very interesting (I'm going to try different representations as well). The great big fast one in the middle is Tank, and the fast growers in general are the obvious boys. Kev, I think you cursed me - only a day later and their combs are getting more obvious, and I am now only confident in having 5 females among the NN. There's also one black one that looks like it's going to have a non-standard comb of some sort, like rose/pea or something. The shame is that the boys all look so great so far - only so many I can keep, so I'll keep watching.
I'm very sorry for my incredible powers! Next time I will
Unless I see a bunch of the desired sex...
Get a picture of that comb if you can. Never saw anything besides single comb from hatchery stock, so if it's really something else it would be quite the exception.
Fascinating how all the peaks and valleys are similar for all three chicks. Do they correspond to a change in environment or diet?

I love your little flock. How many do you have all together? That buff hen in the middle looks huuge! I have always wanted a flock of just naked necks, but since nobody in my family likes them exept me, I don't see it in near future.
@ Kev but I think I heard that bird crow and it was different from the other teen rooster/cockerel. Would be nice if that pretty bird is a hen if you say so that maybe it is. NO SCIENCE in my flock. I have had three surgeries over the past two years. Keep thinking that I should seriously downsize but I do not. Due for three more operations if I consent to having bilateral knee replacements.
My best broody and mama La Senora Rose a serama/NN and she is seven.
PS KEV what is henny feathering ? This bird seems to have early development tendencies but like I said my flock only gets feed and water and not much else since my own maintenance and garden care is quite time consuming. I did not even catch La Senora sitting since she is so small and hides well in my large coop.

Right now I have nine mature NNs, but I still have to cull one of the cockerels. (He and I went at it pretty hard two days ago. I won....and started planning his dinner invitation.) I currently have a dozen NN eggs in the incubator due to hatch in about another week, and my broody is hatching a few more for me today.
In total I have about 46 chickens, but at the end of this hatching the number will jump to around 70. I'm definitely maxed out. And personally, I would get the NNs anyway. Once your family actually interacts with them I'm 100% convinced they'll fall in love. This is one of the best breeds ever!
OKAY!!! Baby pictures!!! Hooray! She sat on seven eggs and so far I've seen five chicks at once. I'm waiting to see if the remaining two hatch also before moving her to a private pen.
Four of seven.
Watching this little one peck at Momma's face taught me just how much patience she has.
The 'chipmunk' chick came from one of my green NN egg layers.

Wow. 70 chickens. I can't even imagine that. Good luck haha!
We have one little hen already and we had numbers of naked necks past years, my grandma also has them and I will always have them. They remind me of her. Nobody (except me) likes her. My sister is actually scared of her. She screams and runs to house whenever she approaches to her. I don't think that will ever change.

That's a cute pic! Do take care of yourself first... I've downsized quite a lot a couple times and admittedly it was a blessing each time as there was time to relax or recuperate.
Henny feathering is a gene that makes roosters have the same feathers as hens- both the colors and feather shape. No pointy hackles or saddle feathers. The most famous example is the Sebright breed- notice both the roosters and hens look exactly the same only the roosters are bigger with bigger combs? That's the henny gene in action.
If it proves to be a pullet by laying eggs... breeding these two together would give a very wild range of colors and patterns. That's always fun!
