Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Yeah....the longer they take to lay, the better they start looking for a dinner invitation. ;)

So I have their eggs incubating for the Easter HAL. If they don't put on good growth I'm afraid the whole lot will be in Camp Fridge by summer. Also until recently they haven't been fertile. I'll know in a week if they are now. At least the bullseye is present now.

The only sexlinking will be from the rhodebars. Barring is sex linked so that cross will produce barred boys and non barred girls.

If the leghorns aren't some kind of cross like California White, all of the chicks from them will be white.. no way to sex link.

With the RIR, the chicks could either come out all black(if roo is pure for black) or half black, half red. No sex linkage either.

Sex linkage is done by having certain sex linked genes in the hen and none in the rooster. This cross will give cockerels with the sex link trait and pullets lacking it. The most common traits used are barring, silver, sex linked slow feathering gene....

The hatcheries use specially bred lines pure for one or more sex linked traits as the mothers for the sex linked chicks, so if you hear something like RIR x white RIR/Rock, the white line really is this kind of line, not the typical white hen from a backyard or even from the hatchery sold as purebred white rock.

edited to add: neck feather picking is very common. Pin feathers are extremely delicious to all chickens.. they are far too exposed on their necks.. too much temptation for the other chickens...

As the hatchery stock NN seem to be leaning towards layer type, I would say the crosses probably would be good layers- don't know about excellent(maybe a few but not all).

as for meat there is a struggle between good laying and good meat. kind of have to choose one over the other or settle for something like good meat but needing to keep a few more hens/pullets for egg supply. A big meaty chicken that lays 300 eggs is the holy grail but realistically it's very hard,

Darn, I thought RIR bred with a black rooster would through sex linked. Oh well on that. I don't know if the Rooster will mate the Rhode Bars. I have him in with 3 of them and the ladies are a tad bossy, which is what got their daddy put in the freezer-he was the prettiest barred rock I have ever seen in person and he came from the Disney line, which is top shelf- was like a puppy to me but gave my wife and dog a hard time terrorizing them constantly when I wasn't around. Anyway, I turned the rooster out with my RIRs and then let one of the rhodebars out and the rooster didn't even look at her and took off after the RIRs. I even put her in front of him and he still pursued the RIRs. Must like red heds????LOL

I haven't had any hens lay at 21 weeks. Even the Leghorns from the local shopping market Trader Joes waited til 24 weeks

The Greek people comment about keeping promises struck me funny. I have a friend from Greece named Johnny real name George he and I are in the construction trades. When I first met him he was going to haul some junk that the former owner here so kindly left at my house for me. After looking at what I had to haul he told me it would take two trips and that he needed two signed blank checks.

needless to say I did not have him haul the garbage

Now that I've know Johnny for 15 years I'd trust him with my own families safety. A very proud man of his country and it tears him up to see what's going on back home.

for some reason the greek people think everyone is stupid so they start with fooling people. but once they see they cannot do it they will never try it again.

I have been working as a representative for wooden flooring with 1 person for about 15 years. his son who works in another shop a few days ago sent e-mail to the factory and asked to cooperate. with the other words he wants me out. his father didn't know anything about it so it seems he might want even his father out of business. even such things happen here.

They look exactly like big minorcas. Over here, the minorcas from the hatcheries are small chickens.. but the good show stock ones are HUGE.. the barbezieux look practically identical to the good show minorcas... so if you get your hands on a good big minorca, they can be your "barbezieux"...

However.. the barbezieux are proving to be nervous birds. as young birds they would panic and run around every time I walked into their pen.. I don't like this. Now as older mature birds, the one cockerel and three pullets they are a good bit calmer, except one pullet stays very nervous.

To be honest, I sometimes think of selling them, I cannot stand nervous birds but their color and type is rather beautiful and the rooster does look "very very tall" especially now he's a little older.

2 of my minorca pullets died young but the third reached age of about 6 months and was big. I recently visited the breeder and saw his minorca roos but they didn't look very big. they were free roaming and I didn't pay attention to them so there is still a hope that they are big. although the pullet wasn't heavy, just looked big. they were a bit nervous as well but I spoil my chickens so even my leghorns are not as they used to be.

are the barbezieux heavy as well or just tall? what is the size of their eggs?

I have heard them called that before.

The Orpington's I have were hatched 4-7-15 and they have just started laying consistently two weeks ago hit and miss for four weeks. So 40-42 weeks. Not good. Pretty but pretty doesn't get it here. Only advantage I see is that they take longer to mature maybe better for meat. Less hormones maybe.

Just trying to give them a chance some how

it seems that the chicks hatched in april take longer to start laying. I have 3 araucanas, 1 hatched in april,1 in july and 1 in september. the youngest one started to lay a few weeks ago and lays regularly. the other 2 followed then stopped after a few eggs. I saw in another thread that someone mentioned that the spring chickens take longer to start laying. my NNs didn't wait so long although my brahma pullet hatched in june started to lay in february - I don't know when brahmas start laying, she is my first one.

Hmm same things happening here. The son of the boss may be coming back to work for his dad. I used to supervise the kid knowing full well this day might be coming. Let's just say I wasn't easy on the kid, so this could go both ways. I've been at this company for 30 years.

We are finally getting some rain here in California but it's coming in fast and hard. Trying to incubate for the Easter Hal and the power is known to go out easily here. I have a generator for that very reason. Twice its been off for a week at a time. At first it was fun no TV had to cook on camp burners making coffee was different. But then it became real old. No showers toilets had to be flushed by getting water from outside source not dependent on electricity. We had a well at the time.

I don't think Johnny was trying to take me I think he just thought everyone should trust him. To him it was no big deal for me to give him a blank check so he could pay the dump fee. I'm going to ask him what part of Greece his family came from.

What type of hardwood floors does your company produce.

Interesting point on egg laying. I think I've heard it before. I'll pay more attention to this.

I've been given a Brahma rooster. Given to me as he was too mean for the people he was with. Put him in with chickens of his own age and within minutes had all of them cornered. Wow ok so I thought your so tough I'll put you in with the older more seasoned hens. No sooner put him in and he attacked the first hen he saw. She merely jumped in the air and grabbed him with her claws which should have been his first clue but no he tried again this time he got the point. That rooster is the friendliest thing now. Whenever I come into the cage he's always at my feet. Probably wants some protection lol

in europe the flooring is mostly made of oak. there are others like ash, maple and imported african and asian but people prefer oak. I don't work for a factory, I am independent and look for different providers. the last one is in poland.

Oak was the preferred wood here but for now we have switched to other types. It's a fad thing. My neighbor has it so I must also.

So you are more sales then?

I headed off to bed so I probably won't answer till morning have a great day
