Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Posting pictures of the ones that I am going to keep.

400

By a Brown Red rooster. One out if my Black hen and one out of a Wheaten Duckwing NN hen.

400

These two are by the Cinnamon NN rooster and out of my White hen. Looks like they exchanged the black spots from my hen to some really light red spots from daddy. Going to try to breed the spots out.

The cockerels from this mating look like they are turning into Silver Duckwing.

For now I'm only keeping 11 pullets and 5 Cockerels, one of which might possibly be a pullet. Pictures in the Calico/ Mottled/Aloha NN thread.

Quick stupid question - processed him this morning. He's resting in the fridge for now, not in brine yet. I was going to put him in tonight. Do I brine him the whole rest period (3-4 days)? Or partial? If I freeze, I assume I rinse first - or not?

(Sorry - had a long day and not running on all cylinders...)

I brine for the entire period and then rinse before freezing. Salt can inhibit proper freezing.

OK, after overnight "air chilling" (so maybe lost a little moisture), processed weight for Apoc was 4lbs 15oz. I didn't get a pre-weight, but that's not so bad for a hatchery NN. I hope to continue to work on increased size in my flock, but that's a pretty good weight all on its own for a table bird for my own use.

Brining now. This may not go into the freezer - I may just cook after rest period.

I didn't have nearly as productive a day as I'd hoped, but at least the week 4 weights and photos are complete. It appears that I'm still better at hatching cockerels than pullets, but I did get some lovely NNs out of this last incubator hatch.

Peta - 12.13 ounce cockerel

Simon - 12.52 ounce cockerel

Finnig - 11.08 ounce cockerel

Gypsy - 9.88 ounce pullet (Bielefelder mix)

Willow - 10.9 ounce pullet

I have one other little pullet, Rue, but when only a little over 2 weeks old she was pecked voraciously in the head to the point that nearly all the flesh was eaten off of her skull. She's been living in a brooder in the house and is slowly healing, but is, quite honestly, rather ugly right now. She's also about half the size of the others, no doubt because she's using all of her calories to heal.

@DesertChic

I've got a pen of Red NN hens that seem to only produce roosters. Both hatched I got from them with the Aloha rooster have yet to produce a pullet.

This round I switched up roosters. I see if that's all they'll produce.

I hope switching out roosters gives you better luck than it has me. It doesn't seem to matter which roosters pair with which hens here. I'm just really good at getting more boys.

beautiful birds.

I had a pullet like your Rue. she was about 5 weeks when she escaped and got pecked by big girls. she had a huge hole on her head. she is about 3 kg now and there is no sign of the wound.

That's because the hen determines the sex of the chick.

My thinking though is maybe they'll like the new rooster better and give him some daughters! Ha hex just wishful thinking.
