Naked Neck/Turken Thread

there are too many rats on the island where I live. I tried everything but they keep coming not for food because they find it in the fields but they are looking for the place to make nests. my very last solution is that I put my terrier mix dog in the chicken's run and no one can sleep at night because of barking, lol. at least there are no more rats around chickens. I need to find a solution how to protect my vegetable garden from bloody rats. I found some fresh droppings and I cannot leave my dogs there.

Maybe a couple cats?

I don't leave feed overnight but rats, field mice and mice make nests under the concrete strips that I have on the ground. I poured water hoping to flood them but water kept disappearing. I cannot imagine how many tunnels there are. and this is between 2 chicken runs and at the corner of my vegetable garden. I cannot use traps as I don't want to kill my chickens or cats that come to my property. I hope that my dogs will help me with rats.

Ok I'm starting to get the magnitude of this problem. If it's under concrete and you can see the holes can you use the spray foam insulation that expands? It's super sticky so don't get it on you. Once dry it's like styofoam If they are coming and going from holes with no other way in that might work.

Or how about smoke any way to get it under walk. Friend of mine hooked up the exhaust of his mower and pumped it into tunnels. Don't know about the safety of that as I've never tried it.

Can you build a box with hole large enough for rats only to enter. Then set traps inside.

How about that electric box some one mentioned a while back.

Just thinking out loud on all of this so none may work. With that many rats it seem a person would be battling constantly.

Would a gravel walk work better than a concrete walk. Without the support of the concrete it would not be so inviting.

I hatched a scaleless! I guess the naked neck gene cleans it up, and they didn't get it, because OH MY GOODNESS look at their beard + stache combo. My husband took one look at them and said "Name it Grandpa." Two eggs have hatched so far, this one and a non-nn fluffy chick. I think both are probably Marshmallow's kids since they have the rose combs!

But seriously look how hilarious oh my goodness you're like a little benjamin button, you were born old

Oh, wow - congratulations! I agree on the name Grandpa!

(I have a Speckled Sussex pullet who is very very spotty (a good thing for my goals), and the top of her head is nearly white, even at this young age. Her name is Grandma...

(You could also call him "Opa"!

OK, I am in hell.

Well, ok, that's an over statement. Well, ok, a SERIOUS overstatement. But still...

I have five males from the Aloha Naked Neck eggs that are really getting to the culling age (12 weeks). I originally was going to keep none (only so much room for roosters here), then I thought, maybe I'll keep one. And THEY ARE ALL SO PRETTY!!!!!

Most likely keeper is this boy, whom I call Rocky, because he is less likely to be full brother to the two pullets.

This is another nice looking boy, but is probably full brother (also Nn).

@DesertChic , you will not be at all surprised to know that the tiniest boy (the one I would never choose to keep) is the friendly, curious, cute puppy-like one. I have not encouraged this or cuddled him, but still...

Even this boy, the only fully feathered one. A bit of a jerk, but I find him really lovely.

I WANT TO KEEP THEM ALL!!!!

I think that these girls are beautiful, but I also like that rooster that you decided to keep. I like him best.

Oh no. I probably shouldn't breed this scaleless, as neat as they are. Their toes on one foot are all curled inward, I didn't notice at first because they were tired, but now that they're trying to stand and walk around it isn't going well for them.. I haven't ever made chick shoes before. They are so small! I'm going to have to hobble them too, the affected foot seems a bit far forward. Poor little love.

I wonder if this is Werewolf's kid. He has two curled toes that I didn't notice until he was basically grown, so I had no idea when or why they cropped up. Tugboat has no such thing and is bigger + broader, and is basically the roo I always see breeding, so I figured I'd have few if any Werewolf babs. Seems I should remove him from the pen.
