Naked Neck/Turken Thread

That's so funny - "Oh, goody, it's sexy sexy time! Pick me up pick me up pick me up!!!!!!!" I can see that being a useful method when working on something specific like that.

Not only do I like having the protection of the roosters over their girls, but I have found that I enjoy having chickens in family groups, at least at this point in my chicken-keeping journey - I suppose it just appeals to me.

Oh I like that too.. have enjoyed that for many years, but now all chickens are permanently penned up, except for one small and long term group of one rooster and 5 hens that get to free range sometimes. He really does watch over and herd them- the hens also very clearly follow and flock around him closely. It's a pleasant thing to see..

My main interest in the hobby is the genetics part of it.. which makes it a necessity to separate/move around... but it also requires fair numbers, sigh.. I try to keep the overall numbers low(well, more like trying not to let it get sky high..) also want to keep as few roosters as possible(neighborly consideration- the next door neighbors are wonderful). Plus other little things like I'd like for a particular hen to be bred by a rooster- but the rooster is in with a large group of hens(15), I don't really want to put that hen in there- you know how new birds are treated by the established ones.... which can interfere with mating plus impossible to tell which eggs are from that hen.. much easier overall to have her in her own pen and have rooster visit.

Or wanting a particular hen bred by different roosters... instead of moving her around and having her deal with new hens, she can stay comfortable and just wait on collecting eggs between roosters. Etc.

Ugh!  That kind of heat is just miserable!  I live in the North GA mountains and the high today was 86!  Seemed hot to me!

Love love love 86* although any higher and I don't like it either. Took a nap instead of checking birds. Now it's 106*. Put a little dust bath/grit bucket in for chicks. Took them all of 2 seconds to jump in. It's 92 in the barn where they are.

Haven't been on in a while! Been busy building our new coop!
Old one:

Tearing down the old one:

New Coop:

We are still needing to add some interior things....auto water system and more roost and fencing another run, but the chickens are in and they seem to enjoy it!
are you sure it is a coop? I could live there! and I love those trees behind. we already have no green left.

it's been pretty warm... 115F.. everybody allright, except for the last freedom ranger hen.

Have a chick feeding question- the chick starter all vegetarian.. how often should I add animal protein for them? I've been breaking eggs, sprinking some black oil sunflower and a dash of chicken/rice cat food over the chick starter mash and stirring it- they sure love it.. but how often should/can they get it?

I'm no feed expert, but I have mine on a 20% protein most all the time. I had one group all they got was a 22% protein feed. If I could get enough at one time I'd keep them on the 22% all the time. They did really well in it.

You know our feeding program but lacking that, we have discussed using fish meal every day.

I give animal protein from time to time just to make sure they will be happy to chase mosquitoes, flies, bugs, etc. I don't think there is a rule how often they should eat it. I just make sure that for the first 2 months at least 95% of their diet is chick starter/grower. I have been warned not to give them too much meat/fish but I forgot the reason. whenever I have too many eggs I give them to my chickens.

someone in another thread mentioned that 22% protein feed is ok for the first 1-2 months only. they mentioned kidney issues if chickens eat too much protein. I would like to hear more opinions about that.
