Naked Neck/Turken Thread

White Rock mother, and no barring on Dad, my NN named Shiloh:

I was surprised by Simon's barring, but pleasantly so.

Excellent- btw just saw your comment on naming the birds. Most of mine are not named, however I 'know' all of them and can mentally trace the ancestry on many of them. But, I sure do see an advantage of naming them to function as ID- lineage, the carcass, etc.

Your pairing proves your white rocks have barring, most likely used as a way to clear their legs to yellow(would have been green without barring present).. and any repeat breeding of non barred to your white rocks would be a sex linked mating- white dot on chick heads= cockerel.

The big surprise is your white rocks aren't genetically black. Nearly all commerical/production bred whites are genetically black chickens.

forgive me for not saying so earlier but thought it was obvious- beautiful birds!

I name my birds because they are my pets with their personality.

if I use black sex link with a non barred roo will her sons be barred and daughters non barred? or it could be anything?

I have a pullet that looks like simon. would her chicks be sex link?

for sex link using barring, it has to be barred hen with non barred rooster. does not matter if they are a breed/mix/anything. So that simon-pullet could be used for sex link mating.

some complications like a white can be barred like your white rock, just you can't see it. She still works for sex link.

a white rock roo with hidden barring with a barred hen will not work as sex link as all chicks would be barred.

Black sex link hen will not work as they are not barred. They are made by typically a RIR rooster over a barred rock. Cockerels come out with a white head spot(barred) and pullets lack the head spot(not barred). Black sex link hens will never throw barring, unless they are bred with a barred rooster. .

Thank you! And not just for the compliment to my birds, but also for the invaluable genetic info. My WRs, although purchased at Tractor Supply, are actually not hatchery chicks. There is a local (meaning somewhere in AZ) breeder of WRs who sold all of her surplus chicks to TSC when they ran very low on available chicks during the "Chick Days" sale. It was one of those happy occasions of being in the right place at the right time.

I'm not actively raising them, but I do have a couple. I've noticed that my NNs with the smallest muffs all turn out to be smaller in size.
I'm looking to buy some egs or trade some eggs in the fall I have a flock of 20 bantam naked necks
