Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I managed to get 4 white NN pullets from dad's defunct SOP project. They are redolent of some of the old stock dad had years ago. I'm not fond of the straight combs so will be breeding them to my newest and youngest White Chantecler that I was fortunate enough to get, along with his brood sister. These are the two youngsters that were outside in all kinds of cold, rain and near-snowy weather that either proved their metal or forged it.

That should be a great cross!!!

I moved my teenager NNs to my araucana boy's little flock. I put 1 mutt and 1 faverolle pullet as well. choco had a little wound in the morning, probably from trying to mate and for the rest of the day they were fine. aniela (white NN) accepted them well. in the evening NNs and the mutt eventually went to sleep and the faverolles escaped to the big coop (the coops are separated with wire only. I had to put her back to her old coop as I don't want to leave her with 3 roos I have in my big flock.

I am getting some marans eggs from france so I have to get rid of some chickens. I have decided to keep black copper marans, silver cuckoo marans, rumpless araucanas and NNs with all of them. I will also have a mixed breed laying flock. today I will look to rehome my avatar roo as I know someone who wants a roo to keep with the hens.

He almost looks like a Dorking. Handsome bird.
That is what I find so interesting about crossing chicken breeds. Some times something random crops up and makes you go oh...

I had thought about breeding my tiny ones as well because proportionally their meat qualities were great.
I could only find one Picture of a dwarfish pullet.

Unfortunately, it's not a very good one. It only has the 1/2 inch hose in the back round to offer scale. They were tiny tiny tiny and layed full sized eggs.. Their legs were proportional to their bodies. Actually except for big eyes they were surprisingly proportional all around.

I hope you have a better luck with yours.

Ya made me think, never seen a dorking.. are they wide/chunky or longbodied and not so wide?

I like that roo very much, he is massive but not a pig. Even stands back and lets his girls eat first.

Thanks very much for that picture, I got the idea perfectly. I had the same thoughts- if they were standard sized, oh they would be such nice heavy meaty birds... goal achieved!

Managed to remember to take pics yesterday after cleaning and hosing down their pen.. not the best pictures:

side pic:

face on of the more extreme one with the one above behind her... her legs are *short*, also good pic showing their 'heft' Not a slim bird here(and all birds in pic are same age):

Face on of the first bird:

Bad pic, but great for size comparsion. I believe the brown bird is possibly their full brother(same father at least)

Looks good! I like to do mine in the left over juice from our pickled beets! I have a batch right now in regular dill pickle juice too. I sometimes use a very thin bladed knife and make a stab to the center of the egg to let the juices get to the inside quicker. Hope they turn out great for you!
