Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I also have a hard time with girls. It always amazes me how good chickens are at hiding any illness or weakness until it gets REALLY bad...

The girls are harder for me to cull too, but my gosh are they ever tasty! I have a handful of girls I need to cull very soon along with a few more roosters and I'm really dragging my feet and coming up with every possible excuse NOT to do it. But these noisy free-loaders sure are consuming a lot of feed. It's not too good for the pocketbook.

Oh, they're tasty alright!!!! I just find it emotionally hard. I think when we are new to the idea of culling our animals, it's a lot easier with the boys knowing that they will fight with each other, harass the girls, and make everybody and everything miserable if you have too many. But girls who are not "part of the plan" when you have breeding goals really need to be considered as well. I really need to get over that.

I am looking forward to seeing how dark his male offspring will be.

These chicks look pretty dark, I also wonder how will they look.

Few weeks ago I saw the flock of my neighbour that has chickens that reminded me so much of yours-they are not fm, but they have bodies and colours that reminded me of your flock- birchens, whites and barreds.

Do some of you remember when I posted about jackals? They killed three flocks around me already. I hear them every night, but nobody has ever seen them during daylight.

Especially in the males the chicks will be darker but the adult coloring will lighten. It isn't as drastic a change in the females, but can be dramatic in the males. I had a few that you wouldn't know had fm as adults but clearly did as chicks.

The coyotes here are the same way. We keep our birds behind a 6 foot chainlink fence.
