Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Wow...they are so cute and they are already red in the face!!! My pullets didn't get any red, and a couple still don't have any, until they were 14 weeks old! I love chick #1!

I'm wondering if they are roos or pullets. It's probably WAY too early to tell (I don't have a clue) but I thought maybe someone would have an idea.

I am giving them away to anyone on BYC if they want them! More chicks in the bator!!!

We might keep on of the brown ones though. We are keeping Chance, not pictured, we had to help this little one out of his shell and we've grown attached to him/her

Kev,Thank you, I do have a great big yellow rooster (came as a "Naked Neck" egg from an unscrupulous seller) that looks very like a Leghorn to me. Mum was definitely a sweet little black NN, but she keeps bad company! I think it's a cockerel as the comb and feet are very big and he has a red face. I'll definitely keep him. He can add his light genes into the mix of black and blue (NN X Brahma).

LoveMyChicklets I love the colours of the top and the bottom chicks. That middle one has sturdy legs! They are most definitely not in an 'ugly phase'.

Here is a pic of one of my girls at about the same age....she, at 15 weeks still has no red!

Awwww! What a cute fuzzbutt! Do you have any idea what all that red means? This is our first time with NN chicks. You just don't see that on feathered chicks- I'm so confused!

How many NN chicks do you have at the moment?

Possibly. I've had some pullets that had either very large combs or showed some pink when they were very young. Combination of both large and really deep red probably are roos. Show us pictures? We love pictures here...

Here the fuzzbutts are. Of course, they are at the "ugly" stage right now :0

Whatcha think????

I think they are darlings! I'm lousy at guessing gender.

I think it means that you have all roos...the roos necks and heads get bright red and from all the pictures I have seen the hens just get red heads. Right now, I have 4 NN pullets and 1 NN roo..they are almost 15 weeks old. No crowing but my pullets are getting some red to their heads at this point.

I love them

I have some pics posted of them on this thread somewhere. Actually only of three....

Here's what my 16 yr old son thinks about his NN, Beardie

funkyfeathers gave a good guess. NN mixes sold as or implied as being 'the breed' are very very common. I would say it's the flea market roo's the one to 'blame' for all those traits.

The two black pullets also have beards- tell tale signs can be small wattles as beard normally reduces wattle size quite a bit or they don't look like typical wattles (strange shape or ultra-thin). Check that roo's wattles.... I don't know why expression of beards on NN are so variable.... experienced the same thing in my birds. Less beard than more beard seemed to be the rule. But also, beard is sort of semi dominant, birds pure for beard gene tend to have larger, fuller beards. If you like the look, try breeding the best bearded ladies with the flea market roo and see what happens...
