Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Evelle....Mine are the first out even when the snow is thick on the ground and did well here below 0 degrees, so they will be fine in pretty low temps.

As for the 'pure breed ' bit.....the two black smaller ones on the left (hen wearing a saddle and roo) are pure breed. As the naked neck is dominant, Naked Neck X anything will give you a bird with a naked neck and fewer than normal body feathers, but crosses will have a large 'bow tie' with thick feathering at the front of the neck.

PG what does Mort think of Blackchops ? What I mean is he allowed to have his way with her ?

I am going to buy a blue male silkie to mate with my two bantam NNs. He is quite young now so I will not have babies until springtime and wonder of PaPa will sit on eggs for me ? ha ha seriously I have heard of the silkies males helping with rearing the babies.

Flower, Blackchops is Gordon's moll. The big yellow mutt roo in the picture above YP (Yellow Peril) tries to 'have his way' with Blackchops, but she does not want to know.

Gordon is quite a 'low-down-the-pecking-order' sort of a guy, so I am surprised that Blackchops reserves herself for him.

as for Mort.....he's a bit lazy much of the time, but finds a 6 year old and nearly bald Warren hen irresistible....there's no accounting for tastes.Warren wears a permanent saddle as....a) much loved by Mort and b) permanently bald back ....age related.

Flower, Silkie boys are great dads. Every single one of my boys helped raise the chicks, even the silkie mix boys. I only had one boy that would lay in the nest with mom. LOL He would just go hang out with her while she was brooding. Did any of your NN girls go broody? One of my NN girls was the first to become broody this season and it was very comical. She shared the nest with a fav/silkie mix, and a silkie mom, so they all brooded together. Well, my NN girls thought it was time to take the chicks off the nest and she comes walking out of the coop and she looked like a football player the way she held her wings and whooping everyones's butt in her way. The silkie mom wasn't ready and was trying to call the chicks back in the coop and the silkie/fav mom was hysterical running from one to the other screaming. I really wish I had a video camera on me that day. It was so funny!!! My NN girl was a great mom though just a little grouchy to everyone else.

New To Farming great story ! My NNs are young and just started to lay. So far I have not had a hen go broody and stay on the eggs. My showgirl did sit for a while but gave up too soon.

PG yes yes I know about Gorden and Blackchops, they are the stars of this thread.

but I just wondered if Blackchops was a one man hen !

I guess Mort likes "life to be easy" sort of guy. Does he arrive at the back door for treats ?

Flower, Mort doesn't come to the back door for treats.....he comes in and crows, and crows and crows.....

"Well, where's the sunflower seeds?"

You may be able to see that his right foot is still quite swollen, but it doesn't seem to give him any problem at the moment.

Yesterday I traded one of my EE's for a NN roo. He is beautiful! So big though, compared to my little silkies and young NN's he is 2x bigger than them. He a the sweetest thing though, and already starting to breed some pullets and hens. I will post a pic when I have time. He has a huge bowtie though, but hes gorgeous anyway. Still thinkin' of a name

P.S. he has the most raspy and quiet crow in the world and the longest earlobes. What a funny boy.

Yup standard NNs are large and quite gentle as far as the ones that I have had. The females tend to be quite and lay very well. So in my opinion they are a wonderful dual purpose breed and fun to cross with other chickens. The NN is dominate and most uninitiated folks can not believe that this trait is normal and want them to be sick or morphed into or from some other creature.
The above applies to the regular size, this year I hatched out some shipped bantam eggs and those are very vocal. Always demanding treats or something. Very bold and adventuresome. In the spring I hope to cross them with a blue silkie rooster. Ohh boy can't wait.
