The attacker (now no more) was YP (aka Beli), big yellow mutt who weighed 10.5 lbs.
I autopsied Mort and found that he had a broken wing about 7 days old. This would coincide with when he and YP fought......Mort appeared to get the upper hand (I only witnessed the last few seconds when Mort chased off YP) and all that was visible was a few peck marks on the faces of both. Mort didn't go into the main coop at night after that, choosing to sleep with Treacle and Mrs Grey, the latter of whom always sleeps with the dog. I didn't think anything of it, as up to 8 birds have been known to sleep with the dog. Presumably Mort couldn't fly up to the perches, so that was his reason for not going to the main coop.
I can only assume YP chased him and Mort ended up in the pond. He would have been very disadvantaged by his broken wing and the cold.
His longstanding foot problem looked to be a cartilage tumour, so he probably wouldn't have made a ripe old age.....but I hate to think of him dying this way.
Mort with his lovely temperament and cheeky ways will be very much missed.
