Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I concur, great pictures and birds. Even though I've had them for years, it still amazes me to see naked necks thriving where it gets cold or is perpetually wet and cool(pgpoultry). So dry and summers so hot here.. I should take pictures of them when it's 110-120F!

Yes you should Kev, you're pretty stingy with pictures.

Beautiful barring on this pair. Look how white their necks are. Is that because they live in a colder climate? Do they get redder necks in the summer? Yes, always more to want isn't there!!

KKH on my monitor the barred NN of EziiLinkoso show up pale pink ! Compared to their wattles and comb the necks are pale but not white ! Not on my monitor anyway. Check out your diet, are you eating enough leafy green and orange/yellow vegetables ?

Yes i am from WA state. I love my Turken X Andulsians i noticed the neds tend to have black caps.
I have recently crossed turkens with Brahmas in both directions (hens and roosters) Often anything i have crossed with my Brahmas gets me hybrid vigor.... but now i think i have a few really ugly ones and ones that are very productive....

Warning: Like all turkens they are alarming looking in their nature but as i have stated before within the naked gene is different levels of nakedness and i have a few that are really looking well... scrawny. Despite having greater than 35% feather reduction this bird has not gained weight, they are fed extra and are spoiled because they were a september hatch. The sickly looking hen has started laying this past week at 4 months of age.

This hen has barely any feathers on neck, none on crop and none or reduced on keel/breast and there is no meat on the breast.

This Brahma X Turken has a very nice "bowtie" these guys are sex linked so any whites are roosters. The Buff Brahma is one of my old roosters that is often the father of my experimental crosses because he is recessive in color but dominant in body type. The other rooster in the background is a Brahma of some type, dont think its pure from looking at the comb.

My favorite and most successful cross is the Blue Turkens I have made. I always get blue turkens when its a Red Turken Roo X Blue Andulsian. The "bowtie" is neat and the bird is well proportioned and even more cold hardy than before.

Any thoughts? Sorry for the many photos....

I have quite a lot of NN X Brahma (mainly X Blue Partridge Brahma) and they are BIG and heavier than a standard NN. I am wondering, ReiMiraa, what size your Brahmas were? British Brahmas rend to be on the big side (a recent rooster I lost was over 14 lbs). My alpha hen weighs over 10 lbs. My Blue Partridge Brahma boy is a lightweight, but is tall.

I have the male equivalent of your blue female (as well as 3 like her) ....yes, that's Gordon.....and he is not so heavy but he is VERY tall....several inches taller than his father, and runs like a sprinter on steroids.

I don't give any of my birds different treatment unless they are ill, but they are all spoiled and have 40 acres to free range should they want.(Only my La Flèche take much advantage of this!)

These NN X Brahma crosses have come into lay at about 6 months and are VERY reliable good layers of large light brown eggs.

Their cold tolerance (and wet tolerance) seems excellent....as do my pure bred NNs, and they have feather reduction, but aren't nearly as lightly feathered as the pure NN. Their legs are very lightly feathered (in contrast with my Brahmas who have very thick and heavy leg feathering).

They males look rather 'gamey' and don't carry a lot of meat, but seem to be very fit and muscular.

Anybody else have opinions on this?

my brahmas are not show quality but hatchery quality... Lionel weighs about 11. give or take the hens are a lot less. Weight is a problem here in the US. someday, next year maybe, I would like to import some UK Brahmas and start focusing on the pure side of the breed. the brahma is my favorite breed.... which i have fun testing crosses with for hybrid vigor, the naked neck is my next favorite because it has many scientific journal articles about the specific gene and how it works. though i think my largest hybrid cross is Brahma roo over rode island red, i think he came close to 13 pounds before i sold him... he didn't have the nice temperment the brahma had. all turken crosses have great temperment.
The juveniles in the first pen are in a heated area, my parents are freaked by their looks and won't let them out till it is warmer.... and since i am at college i do not have much say in how my chickens are taken care of....

Tell you r parents to relax, ReiMiraa.....they don't need the heat and mine are first out the coop with the snow on the ground.

I haven't taken pictures for a good while but will try to rectify that asap. ;)

ReiMiraa, love to talk genetics/characteristics of naked neck crosses soon. Got to rush about getting ready for a meeting today.

Lisa, that worked. Could kiss that cute neck. by the way I have not hatched a *single* chick for the last several months. Just did not have the time or capability. I'm starting to feel that spring time hatching fever coming on...
