Naked Neck/Turken Thread

homeshcoolchick maybe it takes a while before splash show their true pattern. I have a splash pullet and over time she has changed quit a bit. Maybe Lisa or Kev will show up and post info about your chick. They are quite adept on genetics.

just got home......... got three new NN hens 1 year olds. No true bare necks. Two have pretty full bowties and one has just one feather on the side. I went for just the better, healthier looking one versus the bare necks. Two are reds and one is black. Question, should I go ahead and put them in at night or do it in the day light. Someone told me one time it is easier in the dark. They just wake up and do their thing. I know this can sometimes get brutal. What are your thoughts?

I personally go for day light so I can keep eye on things & intervene if a pretty serious fight erupts or one gets cornered and hammered. Or put new birds in a large cage inside the coop or run.

That's a strange looking color. My first thought was lavender, however the color doesn't quite match unless the flash is altering the color. Dun? Khaki? Do you know the colors of his parents or in the flock he came from?

Ok, so my baby is three weeks old now. I think he is a boy. What do you think? Also, what color do you think he is?

Yep! That does look like the color of our chick :) I guess time will tell! I do not know the color of the parents. I can contact the breeder though. I was wondering if it was lavender....I can't describe it , but it just has some sort of lavender under tone when you look at it. I kept saying...it looks purple??? But, I have never had a lavender chick or watched a splash grow out it's feathers. Thank you for the comparison. If it is lavender, what do I breed him to in the future?

Thank you Flower for responding :)
Homeschool, this is a lavender, seems to be around the same age as your chick.. does the color match up to you?

I strongly recommend doing it at night...a dark night. Make sure you don't have to go anywhere the next morning, get up early and drink your coffee out there at the coop to watch for rough stuff. Also helps if they are all put into a new coop/environment so no one has home field advantage. I put 8 roosters together this way recently.

My Arian on page 332 looked just that colour as a chick and now is 'splash'.

WOW! Talk about a transformation!!! Waiting is very hard for me

cielo Your rooster is gorgeous and a good size for 3 months. His feet are hugh and I bet he will be a BIG BOY ! Since you live where it is cooler, you could use a Brahma to cross him with but I would sure use him for breeding with his own kind also. His neck appears very naked which means that he has two genes for nakedness. If you have hen with similar nakedness you are quite lucky as it is difficult to find this bird with both genes. Maybe I an not seeing him correctly. Keep posting new pictures please.

Thank you for the comment!
He is very big and very naked. I agree about his feet. They are freakishly large! He has maybe 5 feathers that try to grow on his neck though they don't do the best job.

When he was first born, I asked on this thread about him. I was worried because he had so few feathers and I thought something was wrong. I was told he was likely pure for nn. I don't have any as naked as him. I have two hens with bowties and one that turned out feathered that I kept from the batch I hatched. I got the eggs from BYC member Soggybottom.

I will try to get some pure hens to breed in the future, I'm on the lookout and am open to breeder suggestions.

How do the genetics for naked necks and feathered feet work out? Could I get feather-footed naked necks?

I am surely a convert to the wonderful naked neck. I think they are amazing.

I'll take some pictures of him and his sisters later. Here are some from his chickhood.
