Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Thanks,got him from a friend,the only thing is he is bantam,but I really wanted to add the dun gene into the crested naked neck project.The splash frizzle naked neck hen has been with the polish rooster only a few days.So should have eggs from this pair to go into the incubator,when the incubator is refilled the first week of march.

It could be influence from 'way-back-genes' from Silkie (walnut comb?) popping out, but nothing rosecombed in this line. This guy is the only one with this crazy wide comb I had hatched and he was (for my purposes) perfect in every way. Now his wattles are so huge they get in is way and he goes to peck at something and then has to shake it out to get everything back in place. He is perfectionally 'functional' but I'm not used to seeing the oversized wattles in these birds.
The red early-on would be say "male" to me.

Hmm. I wonder if the big wattles are a clue but first do you sometimes get big wattles with 'definite pea combs'?

Generally, pea comb also reduces the wattles quite a bit... so your mention of the roo's wattles being huge makes me wonder if he has a modified rose rather than pea and his big wattles is an indicator he does not have the pea comb gene. I did however had two definite pea comb roos with rather large wattles, but they were also paper thin and extremely limp(the pea comb on these were also very large). One was hatchery turken crossed with EE(he was also very big overall), other was LF NN- Araucana mix.

If you didn't get roos with the same big wattles previous to that roo, it would seem to be another clue he has modified rose and is lacking pea which is letting his wattles grow to their normal size without repression from the pea.

Yeah walnut is rose+pea so it could have come from the silkie... did you notice a few birds with not-quite-right pea combs previous to the roo? more rounded or very flat comb area(on pullets/hens)? they may have been cryptic walnuts?

Excellent projects. You'll get plenty of unusual colors for sure playing with dun plus blue and others.

I will have to let some of the genetics experts give you an explanation about the dun gene.You can do a search on dun/chocolate and there is several threads on chocolate/dun.I do know that the white crested chocolate polish are not chocolate but dun.Chocolate breeds true and dun does not.It is according how the mating/pairing is done in dun matings.You can get dun,black or khaki offspring.Hopefully someone else will chime in on this.Hope this helps.Also there is a polish thread on here and someone there could point you in the right direction on how to find what you are looking for.I got my rooster from BYC member DANNY.You could contact him and he does ship.

I'd say that's a good explanation, including mention of dun and chocolate being different genes. The inconsistent terminology does get very confusing in the poultry hobby...

would just add "true chocolate" is sex linked recessive. dun is not and breeds like blue does(black/dun/khaki vs black/blue/splash). also chocolate is still new and not very easy to get yet in USA.

also mixing dun with blue gives 'new' colors- platinum and maybe some other named shade I can't remember at the moment.

Nice! That hen will add color spice- she's silver, sure to make interesting patterns in the chicks with that rooster... If you like this sort of coloring, keep a son from her to continue silvers as silver is sex linked so only her sons would get the silver gene.

This is going to a fun project.Thanks for helping me.Greatly appreciate it.Be looking for some pics in the weeks to come.When you say silver,are you saying silver wheaton like a salmon faverolle or something resembling that color or like a black tail white?
