Naked Neck/Turken Thread

You not gonna find a legit NN high quality breeder in the U.S, only cause it's NN are a European thing. Your better off ordering from Stombergs SQ turkens cause they get there SQ stock from Duane Urch and I have 7 LF Red NN from him and they have a really nice dark red color. There only 3.5 months old but there big for there age and Urch has and old dude with 50+ years breeding chickens. So you have to respect the veterans/legends.

I do not believe the opinion that in this whole big country of ours that there are "no legit NN high quality breeders" available, especially when the very next statements are identifing two sources preported to be high quality, right here in the U.S. even.

At least one of our BYCers has very nice NN's she is breeding to standard.

The question I believe was about where to find bantam NN's and while the mentioned hatchery may have good quality NN birds (I don't know if they do or don't) however I could not find any bantam NN in thier listing of birds.

Now that I know Dunken is a turken. Here she is
400

Heres some fun stuff for ya Kev: My mad scientist experiment: white bird is a NN/serama cross MAMA&PAPA are in the last pic. PAPA is a pure poor quality serama but has personality +.

MAMA is in the second pic, she is a red NN roo / white OEGB cross! This girl also has personality +
some crazy genetics there huh?!

The mix of these two was a good mix...GIZMO the white boy turned out to be a super bird with the best of both breeds! Got another one cooking as we speak, lets hope it hatches!

Beautiful birds! Especially that little white boy. When is that egg due?

A roo same color as mine would be nice but doubt there's any chance of finding one locally...

something with spangles, partial lacing might work..

I'd really like to find some SQ Bantam Turkens. I'm looking for solid colors. I know eggs can be purchased from Stromberg's of red and white. Anyone ever done that? Ideally, I'd like to find black ones. The history of the Turken bantam has intrigued me enough that I'd like to start breeding for the standard of perfection and get more color varieties accepted. I think solid colors are the way to go. Blacks, blues, and buffs are what I'm interested in finding. Pretty much all you can find on e-bay are showgirl eggs. I ordered chicks from Dunlap in the spring but only 4 out of the 10 madeit. (I accidentally killed one of them.) However, only 3 of them had single combs. Luckily, those were 3 of the 4 that made it. Is there a breeders club somewhere? I googled it but there's are clubs for people with naked necks...!!!????????!!!! I think it has to do with tracheotomies....

Welcome to the club- it is hard to find naked necks to the standard. They are out there but hard to find. There is/was a NN club, I was a member years ago but they simply stopped sending out newsletters and heard nothing for many years. Then on this thread maybe a year or two ago there was talk of re-activating the club but seems it has fizzled out.

I think your best bets are either contacting poultry judges and long time exhibitors of any breed and ask if they might happen to know someone.. the long timers have very extensive vines throughout the states. Keep contacting different ones and you should hit on a contact. Poultry Press might be a good place to start if that's still active. Or try to find poultry judges on this forum and ask.

The other thing is to breed your own line. This might be a little hard but do-able. For blacks, pick a black breed with the type you think is close to what the NN standard calls for and basically transfer the naked neck onto it. Much much easier if you pick clean legged birds and do not have any white in the earlobes- those involve several genes and are very hard to get rid of once crossed in. Other things like rose comb, pea comb are not a serious concern, they might be dominant genes but in fact that makes them very easy to totally get rid of after two generations.

I was just on Strombergs. The red and white bantam turkens were still there but shipping for adults will be very expensive. I did get a mostly black pullet from dunlap. She might lose the white flecks when she matures. I thought about ordering white turken eggs from Strombergs but I hate the thought of the price if something would go wrong with the incubation. I guess I'll just have to suck it up. I'd really like to work on blue bantam turkens. I think a good place to start would be blue Plymouth rocks and black australorp bantams, but I have trouble finding them as well. Blue OEG bantams are readily available, but I don't want to breed in attitude... I would make them smaller though. Thoughts?
