Naked Neck/Turken Thread

hi i have a question. I've heard crested varities can sometimes get picked on for looking different than the rest of the flock. Do naked neck have simular problems. I'm would like to get one but not if it will be an outcast. I love variety and only keep 1 or 2 of each breed/color.
For me to add a new bird to my flock as it is would mean that I would introduce at least three at a time. Otherwise adult chickens can and do gang-up on the "new man on the block." Now if you have very young birds it is more easy but intoduction should be gradual. Place the bird in an area where they can be seen but not pecked for at least one week and after that have a place where the new bird can escape to if the pecking gets intolerable. Chickens can be mean.

thanks, i am expanding my flock from 4 to about 20 this spring. My chicks are due on april 1 so if i can find a nn by then it should go easy.
my old girls may not like the new birds but they'll be outnumbered,

Or just add onto your order. It is good to have a few of each breed that you like. I have many different breeds because i like so many of them. On this thread we all like the good health and personality of NN. And because NN is a dominate gene, it is fun to mix NN with other breeds like a breed with a crest or a crest and dark skin. We love making up a special looking chicken which also is big, healthy and lays nice big eggs. Good luck with you search ! Eventually you will have NN in your flock.

Haven't plucked one yet, but I suspect so since there is less feathers (1/3 or more, less feathers)
Not to mention it is much easier to cull. You can see the jugular clearly. Did my first cull this weekend. Poor girl was not handling the cold well, and my NNs need to. The two Spocks are still here, and they are doing very well.

Survival of the fittest. Though I had to keep the one I culled from suffering.

Yes, yes, YES!!!
Where are your chicks coming from? Most hatcheries offer Naked Necks so you should for sure add a couple. They will be your favorites and then you'll wonder why you didn't get more : )
Good Luck!

That is true, too. The only hen I ever processed here was a Naked Neck. For some reason she lost her mind and turned into an egg-breaker-and-eater.
It's so much harder to cull hens. I had a hard time with it. She was just not doing well, and I can't have a bird in Canada that doesn't handle our winter well. That's not something I want to breed into my flock. Had to be done!

Never had an egg eater!

Well, my Frizzled Naked Neck green egg layer eggs from Dipsy Doodle Doo go into lockdown today! Hopefully, I will have 9 little chicks by Friday! When she sent me the eggs for hatching, I couldn't believe how large the eggs were and how pretty green they were! Hoping for lots of pullets so I can get all those beautiful green eggs! Will post pictures as soon as I can!

Way to go! Great job incubating! Hope they all pop out for you!

I have some of the same due to hatch tomorrow (I can hear cheeping in there already).
Here is the proud father (again):
