Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I'll say the first one looking at the # of toes of the chick
Silky is dad
The second rooster pictured has 5 toes as well. The only reason I didn't consider #1 right away is because the leg feathering on the chick is so scarce.

Thanks for your input! :D It's much more silkie like than the second rooster I posted, but not as silkie like as the first. I'd really like to know if any other genes pop out to better predict which is the father. Should send them all to Maury.

They would be sibs or half-sibs --- her father is his father (if I'm saying that right).
Their father was this guy.

He was an awesome NNFGE rooster (molting in that pic), but I lost him about 6 wks ago when I was out of town and that nasty pack of coyotes came through. I lost him and eight bantam NN hens and eight splash Am' hens and their roo --- just gone, nothing left but a few feathers. It sucks, but I made the decision to go and stay with my Mom in the hospital and trusted the electric fence to keep the uglies at bay : (
He was an cool looking rooster.Sorry you lost him.Would be interested in hatching some more of your eggs this season.Would like to have some barred frizzle naked necks or some of the naked neck frizzle bantams(feather legged).

sounds like everyone is having a bit of PRE SPRING GALLOPING lets get going ya'all.

Good pictures aoxa I like the variety. And I like the conversation about culling techniques. Although it does get easier, it is never very easy if it is just an old hen who is still pretty but no longer productive. And the first male bird that just had to go..........I still remembering feeling so bad at having to put it down. I did see a very nice YOU-TUBE video of a woman who wears a pink scarf while she does a very gentle cull and pluck to make us see that culling is business that needs to be done.

Soon I want to see tips on cooking. I have read good posts on this subject but need a refresher as I sit here in my house half packed and half trashed waiting for the time to come to reclaim my little old house in north AZ. I am loosing my mind as I sit here and wish I were elsewhere but BYC NN is a help

I can't help with that --- old hens here are 'pets'.
Red Sex links tend to get reproductive cancers and suffer. I just don't want them to suffer.. and there are so many that I can't keep them all.. Though the original Penny has a forever home here. When you sell eggs and try to break even, keeping 17 laying hens that no longer lay is not feasible.

I hope they last at least 3-4 years. They are only 6 months old.. I should not be thinking about this now.

I saw these advertised nearby. I want to try to make some Showgirls. I have a SG hen. Do either of these birds (assuming they turn out to be boys) look like they have the Silkie gene? I have no idea what I'm looking for. http://sandiego.craigslist.org/esd/grd/3579998907.html
Edited to say, I know what I'm looking FOR...I just don't know what I'm looking AT :P

If one of the parents was a Silkie, more than likely the chicks carry the silkie feather gene. So if you bred one of the 'el cajon chicks' to your Naked Neck Silkie, the chicks would be silkie feathered.
It's a shame you aren't close by, I've got a couple of little guys that would work for you and are breeding age already.
