Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Hey lady's and germs :) have a question about something odd that happened today... I have 8 hens mind you there not even 2 months old yet and two wild roosters that live in my back pasture came up and started dancing around my one hen. Now I know that's courtship stuff but my question is this " why would he be doing that isn't she too young?" And " at what age would I have to do something about these two wild males to keep them from mating with my NN's?"
My naghbor says they've been running around for about 5 years now so shouldn't they be to old here soon?

I'm so tired of everyone picking on my Bertha. Does anyone else have to deal with people calling your NN ugly?

Isn't there a pullet molester law? Lol. Seriously I'm interested in seeing the replies. Maybe they are hard up or a bit senile?

Yup! All the time! I even had my naughbor trying to say that I was a bad person cause my chicks were sick and I wasn't taking care of it... Some people just are ignorant and to judgmental :-(

My ex-hubby told me she looked "diseased" or was an alien chicken. She is my best hen!!!

I have my oldest rooster that I got 5 years ago, he was grown when I got him so who knows how old he really is but he is still mating my NNs

Some people just don't know true beauty if it hit them in the face.

NN are the best.

they are very excited to see girls after so long. so they're well beyond the point of 'any gal will do!'. a bit unfortunate but chickens were bred to have high breeding out put- hens to lay eggs and for roosters to mate often so all those eggs would be fertile.

in a normal stable flock, roosters will be interested in mature or almost mature hens- especially those that are laying, they can tell by the condition of their faces and combs(plump and bright deep red) and generally ignore birds too young to breed. There's always exceptions, some roosters really are too crazy about breeding no matter how many hens he has to himself etc.

Roosters are fertile as long as they are alive.. as long as they can walk and see, they will breed a hen. If a chicken lives past 5-6 yrs(seems a lot die around this age?) they usually live to 11-14 yrs.

the only way to not let those roos not breed your NN is to have them separated at all times.

Unfortunately yes. Most of the time I ignore it or even laugh along.. but yeah it does get old. If it's a chicken person being annoying, sometimes I will point out there are some breeds I personally think are ugly but I won't be going around saying it so openly. Because it's rude and a matter of personal taste.

Some responses have been funny though... after visiting my place, a friend of my nephew's told his parents I shaved the necks of my chickens, even the little baby ones.....

(he never said anything about them being ugly while he was here)

Anyways, just always remember Buff Bertha is Beautiful! (she absolutely is) and nobody can change that.

I've gotten that shave comment more than the ugly comment. A lot think they are weird.. and even more think they are crossed with a turkey.

On my FB page - Lucy seems to have quite the following. Not one has said she was ugly, and those who regularly think NNs are homely seem to like Lucy

I first thought they were ugly, but in that kind of way they are so ugly they are cute. Like a pug... or a naked cat. I like different things. Things that make me laugh :D

Seems to me that folk either love or hare Naked Necks....I'm guessing that we all love them. A lot of folk have never even seen them. When I took a rooster of mine to the vets. (yes I take chooks to the vets if they need it), one lady came up to me and asked "What ever has happened to his neck?".....well he was there for his foot. Having stroked his neck, she decided that they were 'cute'.

The neck skin is really very thick and rubbery which is why they seem to be resistant to both heat and cold. They certainly don't sunburn (not that there's many months of the year here when that could happen). This is in sharp contrast to my huge orphan lamb Jezza who has to have daily factor 55 to his bald head. Some may say I take animal care a little too far.....
