Hi! I am new to NNs, going to pick ours up today, getting 15 pullets and one cockerel. Any advice on this particular breed for a newbie? I got some advice from another Texas friend who has NNs, and all suggestions are definitely welcome! I am all for NOT learning the hard way!![]()
This one has a movie star poise with a fur coat....all she needs now is a diamond necklace!

Your post may have been overlooked because NN do not require any special treatment. They are good dual purpose chickens, hardy and tolerant of heat and cold. Their personalities are usually clam and quiet. They have less feathers so they should be easier to pluck. On this site there are several people with a good store of genetic knowledge who are also fun. Maybe your are not well versed in genetics but I still want to state a few items about genes. Genes come in pairs and are either dominate or recessive. The Na+ gene (Naked Neck) is dominate, so if your bird does not exhibit some loss of feathers on the neck they do not have Na+ gene. Since you have both male and female NN chicks, they should all have some type of nakedness. If there is a very small amount of feathers below the wattles, called a bowtie, that bird could have two copies of the Na+ gene. If you mix your NN birds with a full feathered bird some offsprings will not inherit the Na+ gene.
Maybe this is more that you want to hear at this point, but usually people who are new to this breed will eventually ask about crossing and if a bird is full feathered will it be carrying the Na+ gene. That answer is no, no see no have.so enoy your chicks and post pictures when you can. We all like pictures.
