Interesting! Seems like a legitimate excuse for the lack of crowing.
None of my dudes have really established themselves as head honcho so maybe I do just have girly guys lol.
I'll take new Pics tomorrow maybe someone can guess about the ages. All Pullets/Cockerels were said to be about the same age, we got them off Crag's List from breeder/seller Lady @ start of summer, hatched about April Fools 4-01-2013 That'll make em ..... Just over 5 month. now.
The two in question have started Sumo like " jump in air @ each other and Bump Chests " off and on thru the day. No Spurs No fighting Just that. at night in the Coop the Roos roost on same perch just @ opposing ends with the Ladys between them or on the lowest perch. all 6 were/are raised together. lots of Run area.
8 x 16 = 128 Sq Ft
Seems Large enough .
What do you think ?
The White back to fence Long part is 5 x 16
the Red Coop area is 3 X 8
Area Foreground Rt is sick coop. so not used regularly.

I agree with PyschPeep about the roosters and crowing.....I have read that same thing in several chicken books. I had one roo start crowing at 8 weeks and one didn't start until my daughter showed him how! At four months old he had not crowed yet although he was an only rooster. My daughter came into town and asked if he was crowing yet. I said "No". She went outside and talked to the roo and said, "This is how to crow" and she crowed for him. He looked at her for a while. As she was walking away, he crowed his first crow. Was really funny. We blamed her for all his early morning wake-up calls for a long time after that! LOL
About the chest butting, even my pullets will do that....just trying to establish pecking order, not necessarily a male thing.
Anytime my males OR females do their chest bumping or flighty attacks w/squacking, I usually keep an eye on it but act like I'm ignoring them. It's usually over in a matter of seconds. The only time I'll step in is if they seem to be going at it or if one's biting the other's neck or if it seems they're really locked in on each other.
My mother-in-law has multiple pens separated by genders and ages. Her rooster pen is HILARIOUS when they hit the "teen" stage. They have staring contests until one "chickens out" and flaps away--but that looser will immediately try his luck on another to try to make him feel better for loosing! She rarely has a fight, just ruffled hackles and staring contests!
I'm not sure I've ever heard our favorite NN crow. Even when the LF Cochins, Langshans, EEs, and BR are having a crow off. He's 7 months old; and by the number of NN chicks she hatched out, he sure knows how to get a certain part of his job done.
He's in the hen pen with 2 other roos and about 60 ladies.
I'm curious, too. My oldest NNs are now over 6 months old, huge, but still haven't crowed a once. Not that I'm complaining lol. Be interesting to hear when everyone else's roos generally start crowing?
You know I have never thought about it before, but they are my quietest breed. It is so noisy at my house, I really never paid attention, but they are all very docile and I don't see them crow very often or at all for that matter.
As a side note my notifications are only coming thru when they feel like it. UGH
I can't tell what kind of comb she has.....a single comb or rose comb? It is it a single comb, Barred Rock. If it is a rose comb, Dominecker. The coloring looks like Barred Rock.
The feed mill I can get chicks from orders from 3 different hatcheries, but the feed mill is cheaper b/c they cut him a deal. So basically it's the same thing as ordering from the hatchery. When I called him today he said that they don't have any chicks coming in any time soon, but if I wanted to place a separate order just for them, it's a 25 chick minimum. I'm fine with 5 or 10, but not 25! So I told him it was too many and I'd have to give it a think.
Nava - that'd be so awesome of you! Can you PM me more details on the pullets you're talking about? How many do you have, what colors are they, do they carry 1 or 2 NN genes (I don't care if they're mixed, I guess), how much are you asking on them, and can you send me some pics of them?? I was just planning on ordering pullets only from the feed mill. I have a silver penciled NN roo and more than plenty non NN birds that I wouldn't mind trying a breeding or 2 with to see what gorgeous colors pop out. Plus I heard that they lay yr round.
