Naked Neck/Turken Thread

LOL...Yeah, I bet he is thankful for them now! It is awful cold here this morning. Wish I had them! LOL

My thermometer reads 1 F and feels like it too! I just got back in from feeding EVERYONE their 'SPECIAL' warm winter mash that they get all winter long as well as warm water. Don't know what I'd do if I didn't have water in the chicken houses!

The only places I have to carry water to are the two 10X12 grow-out houses and they are essentially in my back yard.

I see you live in Millersburg OH...I have lots of extended family in that town and general area...their last name is 'Cool'. Lots of 'em around there!

I wouldn't be surprised, she is sweet and a very calm girl. Planing a head, see which one fits, I have 6 boxes, but only 3 are used, one has a broody in it. They found their own 7th nesting spots in the unused brooder. Flower will probably barrow Sylvia for breeding.
I've seen some of my young pullets do this and even go in a lay on the shaving when one of the hens is laying an egg in a nesting box like they are taking mental notes, [can't write, no hands] lol I found one of my young Muscovy girls laying in a nest box the other day practicing. so sweet.

Oh, I am in Millersburg Pennsylvania not Ohio. It would have been "cool" if I was was! Sorry, it has been one of those days and that was a bad pun. LOL
It looks like you were colder than us here. It was 10 this morning. I also make mine a warm mash every morning and they love it. In the summer I make it very cold to cool them down. So you have warm water in your chicken houses? That is awesome! I have a pump in the barn where the main flock is but it is not warm!! That would be awesome to have handy!!

Sorry for moving you to Ohio! lol Having free natural gas makes heating lots of water and piping it to the houses three feet down in insulated underground pipes a real luxury. Considering where you actually live, you are likely familiar with the concept of 'free natural gas'.

I am familiar with it but not very knowledgeable about it. Now, ask me about coal! ;) I come from a family of coal miners. One of my crazy silkies tried to hatch some coal last winter. She kept sneaking under the porch and setting on a few pieces of coal that were under there. I would get her out at night and she would go right back under the next morning. I should have left her go because I might have a few diamonds by now! LOL

If diamonds were only that easy! Both my dad and grand dad were coal miners....I've been inside one or two when I was a kid...but when I was old enough to know better, I knew that was not the life for me!

Same here. My brother got out of it in his late 20's and he was the last one. Long hours and tough work that is for sure! Not so bad if you were the guy on top bringing the buggies up. There are still some of the larger companies left but alot of the smaller ones are gone. There are lots of abandoned bootleg mines too. I live about 20 miles from where I grew up and it is more farming communities here. Lots of Amish.

Ok...The time has come. This is one of three threads that I will have posted the following. I can use and appreciate all the advice that anyone is willing to impart.

Thanks in advance.

My family and I have been breeding Turkens and Australorps for decades but strictly for production and have managed to do so with considerable success if I may say so.

I have recently considered taking one of my breeds and using an extra building and acreage I have on hand, and begin to try to breed to the SOP. Still haven't decided which of my two breeds to chose but I'm leaning strongly toward the Turken/Naked Necks. There seems to be enough people working with Australorps so the challenge of Turkens is very strong.

Thanks for reading...Any help will be appreciated. I suppose the first thing I need to do is acquire a copy of the Breed Standards, visit a few shows (never been to one) and just get the feel of things.

This is not something that I have just jumped into....been considering it for some time...the hardest part is trying to figure out which of my breeds I want to concentrate on. I appreciate both breeds and actually thought of going with another breed that I really like but realize that might complicate things...
