These are pics of my chicken coops, quail coop and rabbit hutch today. I cannot even get to my NN coop to check on my birds. Still raining and ice is still accumulating on everything. Luckily I fed enough feed for a few days and locked my chickens up last night, just worried about their water being froze. Will work to get to the water tomorrow.

Disclaimer: Someone asked me in a PM why I post in BOLD TYPE...the reason is because I lost my left eye in Vietnam and if that weren't bad enough, I have developed a cataract on the right one.

I'm trying to hold off 'til my son returns home before having it removed because I really don't have anyone I can trust to deal with this many birds, even for a couple days. Sorry if anyone thinks I'm 'SHOUTING' at them. When I use the bold type, at least I can see what I'm writing....

Below is a pic of one of my favorite cockerels. I don't even know what color he would be called. I plan to pen him with about 6 older NN hens in the spring that have the same very dark red color all over except that they have a few black feathers in their tails.

Ron, red Naked Necks are supposed to have black tail feathers so you rooster is in good shape and no DQ cause of black tail feathers. It is weird cause you would think solid red is solid throughout the whole body but it's not (only the tail can be black on the reds) Hen, have some black on tails, but not as much as roosters.

What helps me to think of the perfect Red Naked Neck is to look up pictures of show quality Rhode Island Reds and try to aim for the rich dark red color and body type of SQ RIR. Both are very similar breeds with size/weight, color, proportion, body physique. Only difference is RIR have feathers on there necks and Naked Necks don't.

Thank you. I've have to get a copy of the standards. When my son (Jason) gets home, I'll have him take pics of the red hens and others. They have the very dark 'oxenbloot' color with a beautiful sheen. The info. on the tail feathers is very helpful. I hope the bit of 'cock-black' coloring on my cockerel doesn't show up on the pullets and with a bit of luck perhaps the cockerels too.

This will be my first effort for breeding for color. We will have much work to do on the 'SOP' building before we can get started on that in a serious way.
