I love mountains but I heard many horror stories about truckers crashing/dying in WV mountains almost as bad as the rocky mountains. Working on getting my cdl but this part of the job scares the crap outa me.

In WV, there are some very harrowing switch-backs, 'hair-pin-curves'... that are tough, even for me in my 1-ton dually...but you will get used to it. Going down hill is worst but what makes things really bad here are the nose-picking skiiers. They show up with flat land summer tires on their vehicles and provide a great living for tow truck drivers but they will also kill people by getting a 'buzz' to settle their nerves...I love mountains but I heard many horror stories about truckers crashing/dying in WV mountains almost as bad as the rocky mountains. Truckers try not to use there service brakes as much as possible and use the Jake Brake aka (engine brake) on mountains to save brakes, but sometimes on step downgrades you need to brake and the last thing you need smoking brakes then you have no brakes cause of your weight, then your a runaway truck... I am going to join this job where I might die but if that happens only thing to do is pray.
We have those sand pits in the mountains here in NC too.I might suggest that you do all your praying before stepping into the truck...that way you can keep your mind on the job.
Hey..I have a cousin that's been driving heavy trailers across these mountains for the the last 17 years. If that mental dullard can do it...you can certainly do it too and soon will become expert!
EDIT:They have gravel/sand pits to catch runaways every so often on these bad mountain roads...they will stop you without in

I say without injury...but there might be a piece of fabric 'pinched' out of the driver's seat.![]()

The greatest problem around here seems to be the log truck drivers. Those trucks are ALWAYS over-loaded and they look like they are about to tip over...even on what precious little flat road surface to be found in this state.I'd say your right, just looking at them and knowing a truck might need to use one is enough for me.![]()
Ugh don't get me started on log trucks.. I don't know about there but most look like their on their last wheel and riding on bald tires too. every time I have to pass one I hold my breathe and get around them as quick as possible . I don't know how they pass inspection. The greatest problem around here seems to be the log truck drivers. These things roll over hills so frequently, they are hardly mentioned in news outlets unless there's a death involved.
