did a quick peek at pictures of Tom's birds- definitely a person who has experience working with the buff color and show birds. He was/will be invaluable help for you.

@ Vamvakas and Nava, thank you both for the words of caution. I was made aware of this situation when I first broached the subject to a breeder/judge but decided to include this bird just the same.

We are not pinning our work on the prospects of one bird or even one other breed and don't expect results over night. If we wanted quick, cheap glory, we might be able to take this Orp cock bird to shows and do some winning but we have Best in Show rosettes by the score from our dog breeding/handling days and of course, Jason's years of playing with horses as a youngster.

Depending upon your point of view, both Jason and I are either blessed or cursed with dogged determination and my years of hard work and the natural bounty of this farm property, (in particular, well beneath it) should provide us with the wherewithal to make mistakes and still be able to play with these birds for the rest of our natural lives.

Thanks again for your cautions and I would really hope that if you see anything else that we are doing wrong, please do not hesitate to point it out..we need all the help we can get!

I have said this in the past before but since many don't breed NN/or are new at breeding NN, what I like to use for an example with trying to breed for SOP NN's is to compare them to a SOP RIR's. They have same body weight, breast size as the RIR, same dark red color. A lot of people think a 12 lbs NN rooster will win just cause he's huge but SOP only calls for 8-8.5 lbs, same thing with a RIR capped at 8.5 lbs

The RIR helps me a lot cause I only breed Red Naked Necks and realize cause of there capped weight at 8.5lbs..

Wish I knew a Buff NN breeder but I never seen a Buff NN at a show..

Before anyone ruptures a vessel, it's time for some factual information. I did intend to acquire two cockerels, sired by the Buff Orp in question but after discussions with the Breeder/Judge...that idea was scrapped.

I did get a rise and that's exactly what I was after. Thank you for entertaining me...I knew someone would take a well cast fly. This board is too slow so I was just trying to liven up the discussion.

PS....Still thinking of getting one of the Buff cockerels...just for kicks and giggles...and because I can, compliments of a well known breeder/exhibitor on this board. And I just might let him cover a couple or 4 or our pathetic production Buff NNs...with no black tail feathers.

As for and weight of birds, according to the SOP...I have read where a certain Judge admits that, at least with Australorps and Buff Orps, all other things being equal...the larger bird will usually take the honors, even if that bird is a pound or two over standard. No one demands a weight on the birds in large fowl exhibition...again, according to this certain well known APA judge.

I just thought I would mention that the color is not the same. Naked Necks are a lighter color.

There's something about putting food coloring in their vent that is suppose to work. I tried it once but it didn't work because I didn't put enough in.

I use game-trail cams. They are very effective and not too expensive.

I'm loath to put anything up the butts of my birds...I really can't see where anything good can come of it.
