Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Thank you..... Ginge is a particularly tame little hen from an egg abandoned by a broody just at the time of hatching....so 'hand reared'. She is low on the pecking order. The massive Artemis is very tolerant of her. Your wisdom,as always,Kev, (and anyone else who chips in!) is always SO useful.

Kassaundra, you always seem to be hatching. I'd love to hatch more, but I end up with too many cockerels and no ability to cull them. What do you do with the ones that you don't want to keep? Do you eat them?

Just looking back over the last few pages there are a lot of interesting and very attractive birds. I am SO glad that there are folk who are discovering and living these birds.

Yes, we eat the extras. I only intended to hatch out the two batches this year to rebuild the flock, but the two broody girls had other plans, so I gave them a few eggs. It just seems like I hatch a lot b/c I post a lot of pics of the chicks!

That's a crazy pattern. She might look exchequer if her mottling gets heavier.

Hello! Long time no see! My guess- snuggling under others apparently is of great comfort to chickens in general, a hold over from when they were chicks. Chicks will try to snuggle under their mothers as long as they can and if young birds are still sleeping on floor, they spend a fair effort trying to go under other birds or wedge themselves between birds. Most adults will not tolerate another trying to snuggle under like this so this is a very tolerant roo!
Kinda gives a new meaning to the term, business up front, and party in the back!

I have been being intrigued by it too

My Australorp rooster is shooting blanks and not it doing right. He is very active in mating but he's not making the eggs fertile. My NN rooster is good. Such a shame having a 12+ lbs roo and sucks at fertility ..

I got word that one of Turkens eggs hatched out. Such a shock to hear that. After everyone trying now, with over 100 eggs and no chicks, boom someone had 1 chick hatch out. Which was a fluke, because I added in some mix with some pure breed eggs (Other then NN), and out pops a NN chick.

My daughter will be so happy when she finds out that Turken can produce a real live chick. All of ours died in the shells at about 2 weeks. Everyone else as well. And now, we have a live hatch. I am just so happy.

Haha that was me- partied hard core... the party side was down to the waist.

If he's not doing it right, try putting him over a large NN hen?

Back when I had show stock silkies(extremely fuzzy, short backs and legs, deep bodies etc), several cockerels just couldn't get it right with the silkie hens until a NN bantam hen was put with them it's like they got their 'aha!' and the eggs started to come up fertile after.

Other times, trimming the feathers around the vent on both sexes did the trick. If the Australorps don't have particularly long and thick feathers around the vent, it may be he's still not yet fully mature despite the breeding behavior.
