)...In dealing with dad, frequently the tip of the iceberg is what you see initially.

As mentioned above, I'm being 'gifted' several young adult NN hens and I'm happy about that. I was informed by Brother this morning to expect a shipment of chicks from McMuarry hatchery, somewhere around 8/26--28 as well.

Along with being given the young hens for my 'project', dad has also decided to provide me with a bit more education. He is going to teach me how to caponize male birds and he is going to use cockerels from McMurray. Apparently there is some sort of serious problem at Cackle Hatchery that has shut them down for the rest of the year.

Dad knows how I feel about learning this procedure....not high on my bucket-list but.....I'll just grin and bear it since he thinks I SHOULD know how to do it. Upon reflection, I suppose it won't hurt. At first I thought he was tired of us raiding his freezers at every opportunity but I know that's not the case. They have far more capons every year than they can use and generally wind up giving or trading them away, even after we rob them. I think he just wants us to know how to do it.

Jason tells me that dad is very interested in my 'project' as it stands alone and that the resulting progeny could only be improved if caponized or poulardized.

That is all...

It is a dying skill set, and you never know where and when knowledge will come in handy. It isn't hard a little patience and the right tools make it easier.

That's pretty much what Jason said.

I'm not squeemish in any way, just lazy.

I've been able to cut my work hours WAY down and will cut them even more this fall so I guess it won't hurt me to put a few hours into this. Brother can do one every minute or so but he's been doing it since before puberty.

It's onw of those things I'm not really looking forward to but will be extremely happy once I know how to do it.

It's sort of like painting my walls....once I get started, I can't stop...I paint everything in sight. I guess when I learn how, no little chickie will be safe!

Are you Turkish?

Instead of spring chicks, I'll be having or so many autumn birds ? There is a long line at the nesting box because four of the five have "sitting hens" One box has two sharing. Oh my, I need to come up with some different arrangement. I guess a few are destined to be moved elsewhere.
Yea, it's a cross I've never seen before & I'm trying to figure out if it's possible. I want to eventually make them correct d'Uccles with the naked neck gene...I found someone with NN mottled bantams, maybe that's a good place to start? I already raise d'Uccles.
Why would it not be possible to breed d'Uccles to any other chicken ? I have a few crosses from a friend. They are easter eggers and the rooster was d'Uccle. They are very pretty and good producers but not friendly.

Well, I got a little picture happy today:

This pretty little lady is from my last hatch June 1st I believe, so is about 8 weeks old. She is from my NN rooster over a Salmonish colored 1/2 NN and 1/2 EE hen.
This is the one that I have been posting on, on Documentation of my Naked Neck Project.

This little lady is one I picked up from a local breeder along with the one that follows. Mostly black with gold in the breast feathers and the neck bowtie.

Miss Blue, another one that I picked up from the local breeder.

Here is another from my last hatch. My little Columbian colored one.
**Note to @Kassaundra , This one is out of the sister to Mensa.
