Naked Neck/Turken Thread

my babies cant remember their age but they are spoiled as of 3 days ago they (along with my hen and chicks that hatched around the same time I got these) all decided inside is bed instead of outside in the coop. My spoiled birds are living in the cat tree.

I use rolled oats in the FF instead of whole oats...someone said I'm spoiling my chickens. Compared to letting them sleep in the house, cat tree or not...I'm downright evil to mine!

None of my chickens remember their age.

After having said that {above}. Here are my two oldest NN hens, I can't remember their exact age myself, but somewhere between 3 1/2 to 4 years, if not mistaken this is their 4th year of laying so I figure 3 1/2 years.

they are penned with this fellow

this is my current EE rooster he's just about 1 and 1/2 years old.

These are going to be the next addition to my green egg NN program. Along with:

NN rooster to these three hens.

Sisters or 1/2 sisters to above EE rooster.

Just got them penned today, and will start collecting eggs on the 6th of Sept. and set them on about the 12th of Sept.

I have 2 Turken chicks, 5 weeks old. From the looks of the black one, it has a comb and wattles, it is a cockerel. The other one is a buff and I think a female, it has no wattles and the comb is less than half the size of the black chicks.

The breeder was trying an experiment with an Australorp and the Turken. I don't know which was the hen or the rooster. I am not even sure that the cockerel belongs to the Australorp but it is MEAN. I had him in with 8 other chicks, plus the buff Turken. He bites and I am wondering if anyone thinks he COULD be protecting the other chicks?

I have them in a large plastic tote, like Rubbermaid and when I reach in to change the water, give them food or pick them out to change the bedding, he bites me. Not enough to draw blood but hard enough that if I didn't have to work with him, I wouldn't reach into the tote at all.

I have not heard of Turkens being mean but then I have not heard of Australorps being mean either. Has anyone heard of either of these breeds being mean? Thanks.

Can you post some pics of your chicks Sylvia? I'd love to have them to compare to my little Turken. She/he will be 3 weeks old on Monday and I have no idea what he is.

As far as the aggressive part goes, I think it depends on the individual bird. I had an ameraucana (that was supposed to be a pullet) that started fighting with the other chicks when they were 10 days old. At 5 weeks he was crowing. At 6 weeks he tried to kill another cockerel and started biting me. He wasover the top aggressive and we couldn't keep him. If you want to take the time to work with yours you can try to make him more submissive by doing things like holding him and "pecking" on the back on his head with your finger. He should lower his head and be submissive to you. There is a good article on BYC that explains how to train a rooster. Not sure if it would work in your case or not.
