Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I use rolled oats in the FF instead of whole oats...someone said I'm spoiling my chickens.  Compared to letting them sleep in the house, cat tree or not...I'm downright evil to mine! 

they will actually sit on the door ledge thing and screech till I open the door. Now I just leave it open for them.

Can you post some pics of your chicks Sylvia? I'd love to have them to compare to my little Turken. She/he will be 3 weeks old on Monday and I have no idea what he is.

As far as the aggressive part goes, I think it depends on the individual bird. I had an ameraucana (that was supposed to be a pullet) that started fighting with the other chicks when they were 10 days old. At 5 weeks he was crowing. At 6 weeks he tried to kill another cockerel and started biting me. He wasover the top aggressive and we couldn't keep him. If you want to take the time to work with yours you can try to make him more submissive by doing things like holding him and "pecking" on the back on his head with your finger. He should lower his head and be submissive to you. There is a good article on BYC that explains how to train a rooster. Not sure if it would work in your case or not.

This is the female. He is almost twice as big as she is.


Even though the room is light these pictures came out a little on the dark side. The female is a lot more buff or red colored than it looks like here.

this is my 9 years old black nn

this week i got 3 from her but last week i got 5

She's beautiful and doesn't look her age!!! I love the black coloring too!

Great pics Sylvia! I guess I'll have to wait to for wattles or crowing. My Turken is an olive, so he's 1/2 Marans, 1/4 Ameraucana, and 1/4 Turken. He has a pea comb. I can already see perhaps the three rows coming in. I'll check again tomorrow. Does your cockerel have a pea comb?

Wow! Your babies are well loved and well protected! Any special secrets for getting them to live that long? My neighbor has a saying about her dogs... If they already think they're in heaven, they won't go anywhere for a long, long time. That must apply to chickens as well.

i have no secrets ,well i used have a barred rock same age as the white leghorn and the other ones but in june a predator got into my chicken coop and killed her i was so upset because barred rock was laying

I posted the following on the Production thread and decided to post it here too, since NNs are involved.


"I received a forwarded email today, stating that 26 Dark Cornish cockerels will be shipped to my address and they should arrive Wed or Thur. These are to be the fodder for my caponization education. I was dreading this prospect but now I'm looking forward to it, especially with my new 'project' coming together.

Dad was going to bring me 25 of his 'best' young Turken hens for the project but thankfully, I had Jason talk him into reducing the number to 6 or 8. Surely I can find a couple or three likely prospects from that number. I'm not interested in eggs but rather am going to work in conjunction with dad and Jason on producing 'special' meat birds for my household...nothing commercial.
What extra eggs I can't easily give away can be boiled and fed right back into the flocks.

Mr. Jimmy sells eggs to his church congregation so I suspect any over-flow will wind up there."
