Naked Neck/Turken Thread

It's due to a mistaken notion that the black skin is sex linked gene. It is not.. that page has been up for ages with no correction.

Bottom line it does not matter which way for the first cross. NN roo, silkie hen works just as fine.

The only thing to consider is if the NN has either clear yellow or white legs, it has the Id gene which IS sex linked and it "messes up" the expression of the black skin gene.

If the NN has either blue or green legs then it doesn't have the Id gene- and all chicks would turn out black skinned, regardless of the sex of the parent breeds.
Thank you for the explanation. I asked on the showgirl thread, but never got a reply. I couldn't make sense of the why.

As for breeding showgirls... I've made them from scratch(and I'm actually the person who coined the name many years ago..)

On paper, getting a NN, sillky feathered bird is relatively easy.

The difficult part is getting them to look as nice as the show bred silkies.. especially if starting with hatchery stock silkies. They will look funny and cute but they will have all kinds of things like long narrow bodies, way long legs, the crests and leg feathering will be very variable in quality.

A common thing is the first generation silky featherd birds feel rough and prickly when handled despite having silky feathers. Completely soft feathers comes with generations of breeding back to silkies.

Getting a very good quality silkie from show bred lines really cuts down on the number of generations before seeing birds with the rounder bodies with shorter bodies and totally soft fuzz.
That too is interesting.
Thank you.

Kev how many years since u started on show girls. I remember the first time I heard the name was from a guy from Florida visiting here in Pennsylvania

Oh man it's been a while... forgot the exact year, I think it was back in the early/mid 1990's.. well before the dreaded 2YK lol I was part of poultry emailing list, every member got emails from everybody who was a member of this group. Bunch of us got real friendly and chatty on Dom_Bird, several members got kicked out for being too chatty and so Bird_Farm got established... it was even chattier and so much fun. I was already a NN advocate back then and tried to encourage people to try out NN.. as part of a in-group joke thing, I mentioned NN silkies- Las Vegas Showgirls! and few other members just loved that idea.. it took off from there with several 'main' players starting their lines and spreading the birds or the idea around.

NN silkies have been created few times through the years previous to us but afaik they never took off and the Showgirl name and the current interest can be traced directly to the Bird-Farm group with me being the name originator.

Good times! :)

p.s. I created a showgirl line using show silkies and bred for many years, with some also laying green eggs. Unfortunately I was forced to reduce the flock and had to make the hard decision to sell and give away all of the silkies and showgirls....

My all black turken chick, became a black turken pullet with brown patched on her chest and wings and now she has started showing a green iridescence on her black feathers. I'm glad this one is the dominant hen because she is definitely my favorite of the flock.

How funny, I have not followed this tread in several weeks and was just browsing the SG thread and there were several comments about making SG and I gave my opinion on how I would make them and I come over here and there is a bunch of SG talk and how to make them!! LOL. My favorite NN roo was killed the other night by a racoon, I was so bummed!! There are 3 less racoons visiting my yard as of this morning!
I produced the blackest FM NN baby ever last week and I hope it is a roo.
I have been toying with the idea of a shamo silkie or a shamo frizzle!!

I had asked on the SG thread about the why's but hadn't gotten any real replies so when breeding showgirls came up on here I commented I was still trying to figure out the why's and Kev was nice enough to give me the input. Of course as soon as he answered me here I started getting replies there...lol

What's a shamo?

My but it is outstanding that you are able to return here. May you keep Hail and Harthy as possible.

So are there any mad scientists who are working on NN, frizzle, clean leg, LF (the bigger the better) non FM birds?
